TITLE: 3 Simple things 

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 17:1 - 19

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Jehoshaphat was the successor of King Asa.  Know that before King Asa died, he left the Lord and so God said that he will have wars upon him because of what he did against God.  So note that when Jehoshaphat came into throne, he inherited also King Asa’s wars and problems.  That’s why, at the start of this chapter, it was written that King Jehoshaphat strengthened himself against Israel.  He built his defenses because he knew that he inherited the wars or the battle that his father was fighting while he was still alive.  So as a young king, he really didn;t know what he was doing.  At 35 years old, he inherited the throne and along with it the problems that are really out of his control (because it was spoken by God due to Asa’s disobedience).  So what did King Jehoshaphat did?

Many times, we, ourselves, are face with problems that are out of our control.  Sometimes, we inherited it from someone and there’s just no way to stop it as it is already an ongoing matter, like a curse, or a certain character, a tradition, etc.  And after doing what we know we can, what else is there?  Well, Jehoshaphat did what he can at that time, which is why he strengthened his forces against the King of Israel but that’s what’s left he could do... Nothing more... So he did what he knew his father once did that brought his father one of his greatest victory...

What did Jehoshaphat did?

1) Seek God - he sought the Lord...seeking requires a decision!  And when he sought God, it was a decision to choose good rather than evil.  When King Asa was alive and was with God, he established a covenant with God together with all the people of Judah.  They promised to seek God and the people were one by one asked to make a decision to seek God and I believe Jehoshaphat was one of them during that time who chose to seek God wholeheartedly (2 chronicles 15:15).  I believe during the times when Jehoshaphat no longer knew what to do, he remembered his covenant, his promise to serve God and seek him wholeheartedly.  May we do the same.  May this be our first action when we face problems that are out of our control or no matter what kind of problems we face.

2) Followed God's commands - He did what was said in God's words instead of doing what is logical (practices/tradition). He chose to listen to God instead of what his society, situation, other people tells he should do.  But note that for Jehoshaphat to know or follow God’s commands, he must first know it.  So the king took the time to learn and study God;s words too.  He knew that even if the logical thing to do is build his army or make alliances to other nations, he still chose to study God’s words, and follow it instead.  Sometimes in our lives, following God seems to be illogical.  What do i mean?  God said give your tithes, but in most cases, we dont have any money left to buy food for our family yet God said give.  Or God says, repay evil with good.  People will call us foolish or martyr or weak but this is the human perspective.  Sometimes, God’s commands is a total opposite of what our human mind think we should do to solve our problems.  Because God says His ways are higher than ours and His thoughts are greater than ours.  So if we don’t study the word and know what God’s commands are, we will continue to follow our own human thinking.  So let’s make sure to study the word at all times just like King Jehoshaphat who did not leave the studying of God’s words to his priest or to his scholars, but he studied it himself and followed it.

3) Devoted to God's ways - He acted on what he learned.  And he made sure that everyone under him do the same!  Devoting ourselves to God’s ways means acting on it and it requires commitment.  King Jehoshaphat destroyed the high places and Asherah poles, these are temples or place of worship for other idols or other gods.  These are things that diverts our focus to God.  What are the high places or Asherah poles in our lives today?  Are they our work?  Are they our loved ones?  Are they our family?  Are they our gadgets?  What are they?  Anything that pull our focus away from the Lord.  Instead of reading the bible and praying, we’re going to watch Maalala mo kaya first.  Or instead of worshiping God and going to church, you have a family day because it’s your loved one’s birthday and this is the only time you have to spend with the whole family.  What’s keeping our focus away from God?  We must rid ourselves of them.  

King Jehoshaphat also sent officials to teach of the word of God to the whole nation.  He didnt keep the truth to himself.  He knew that as the one knowing the truth, he had the responsibility to ensure that the people under him or under his influence or part of his life, are aware of it.  Do our friends know that we love God?  Do our customers know that we believe in Jesus?  Do our loved ones see the value of our faith in Christ?  There’s this one saying I saw that says, “Your life should make your non-believing friends or loved ones question their disbelief in Christ” - are our lives make that same reaction to them today?

What did God to Jehoshaphat?

1) Security - God established the kingdom under his control (vs 5) Do you want God to establish you despite of the different problems or issues you have in life?  Do you want him to build you up form your life in the midst of its brokenness?  Then Seek God and be secured in His love.

2) Provision - God gave him great wealth and honor (vs 5)  Do you want God to provide you with whatever you need despite of the many struggles you have to go thru?  Then follow His commands.

3) Peace - God caused the surrounding natiosn to fear the Lord that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat (vs 10) Do you want God to give you peace inspite of the many battles you have to face? Then devote yourself in His ways.

4) Strength - God made him more and more powerful (vs 12) Do you want God to give you strength to face every day?  Then Rid yourselves of all that is not of Him.

5) Connections/Relationships - God gave him resources/men (vs 14 - 19) Do you want God to give you the connections and relationships that will make your life fruitful?  Then share the truth to others.

Seek God, Follow His Commands and Devote to God’s ways!  3 simple things that will sure to bring such incredible and powerful change in your reign in life.
