TITLE: Hezekiah Celebrates the Passover

Scripture:  2 Chronicles 30:1 - 27

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 30 spoke about King Hezekiah with the men of Israel and Judah together celebrating the Passover.  It was a delayed celebration as there were not enough priests and levites who are consecrated to perform the celebration on time.  Yet despite of the delay, King Hezekiah made sure that everything was done according to the Word of the Lord.  Each Priest and Levite were consecrated and the celebration was done according to God’s instructions from the beginning until the end.  King Hezekiah made sure that the celebration was not only done by Judah but invited everyone who is part of this activity.  Despite of the conflict between the two nations (Israel and Judah), King Hezekiah took the risk of sending out letters to everyone in Israel, inviting them to return to the Lord.  King Hezekiah did what was right and his intentions were not to unite the two nations, or conquer Israel or for any other agenda than celebrating the Passover as obedience to God’s words.  What a pure heart!  

Many leaders today take advantage of any opportunity they get to expand their power or strengthen their position.  They call for peace and unity but their hearts have a different intention.  Unlike King Hezekiah, who was raised in the care of his mother and grandfather, Zechariah II (priest), he understood the importance of the celebration of the Passover.  And when he called and invited everyone to join the activity, he did not seek anything else than to celebrate and praise the Lord.  His letter showed pure intention, included reality of what’s happening to them right now and providing a solution to get out of whatever predicament they are in at that time.  However, it’s possible that because of the years of conflict between the two nations, the people don’t see the good or pure intentions anymore.  Their hearts are filled with doubts and negative thoughts that despite of the pure intention of King Hezekiah, they only see “trap” so they ridiculed and scorn the couriers who sent the letter from King hezekiah.  The same way today, our world is filled with negativity and when one does good, people tend to think that the person who is doing good has a hidden agenda.  What an irony because man was created in the image of God and is naturally born good but people today tend to see the evil/bad more than the good that he is supposedly.  What a sad truth but something we ought to learn from.

Despite of the stubbornness of the rest of Israel, there were some who listened and humbled themselves and participated in the celebration.  It was the first major celebration after a long time since the time of King Solomon.  Because it was a practice that not everyone was accustomed of doing as it was not practiced for some time, some people did things that are not in accordance to what God has instructed.  King Hezekiah possibly anticipated this and so he prayed to God and intercede to those whose heart is set on seeking God but were unaware of the right practices or tradition.  And the Lord heard Hezekiah’s prayer.  We ought to learn from Hezekiah in this chapter.  Let us remember especially when we are dealing with different people having different level of faith or relationship with the Lord.  Some may not understand or know the right actions, instead of being judgmental of their actions, let us remain with pure heart like Hezekiah and give them grace and favor and patient and intercede for them.  We cannot expect them to understand immediately the truth when they are just starting out.  Instead of driving them away or executed them for what they did, King Hezekiah prayed and intercede for them.  What a good heart this king had?  May we have the same heart and patient and understanding.

The best part of this celebration was that it was filled with rejoicing that their travel or journey from home to Jerusalem, no matter how long or far, it was all worth it because God gave them great joy, unity and blessings to a point that the celebration was extended!  Originally was a 7-day celebration, it was extended to 2 weeks of celebration and praising God!  Hallelujah!  Here we can see that man is truly designed to praise the Lord.  After a long time that they were not able to praise and worship God, when they went to celebrate the passover, 7 days were not enough!  Because they have deprived themselves of their purpose for a long time and now that they are doing what they are designed to do...it was just pure joy!  God heard the priest and the levites who blessed the people because their prayer reached heaven!  Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, what a wonderful celebration they had during that time.  Truly if we do what we are designed to do, great joy awaits us!  Thank You Lord because You created us to praise and worship You and so our whole being seek to just that.  And when we do our purpose in life, we receive satisfaction, great joy and unending rejoicing that 7 days will not be enough!  Lord thank You and help me to have the same wisdom and leadership like Hezekiah, who did what was right before YOu and made sure that everyone under him including the people of Israel (no longer his people technically because he rules Judah only).  Despite of the division of the two Nations, Hezekiah expanded his influence not only to his own kingdom but to Your whole people.  Wow!  Lord help me to have the same heart and humility so I may influence the people around me whether they are under my authority or not, back towards You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
