TITLE: Jehoram King of Judah
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 21:1 - 20
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Chapter 21 is the story of the beginning of King Jehoram’s reign, King Jehoshaphat’s firstborn son. He was only 32 years old when he reigned as a king yet his reign lasted only for 8 years. Despite of the examples that his father showed him, he failed to follow the steps that his father left for him. Instead he was lured in the tempting side of being “evil” as he merged himself with the house of Ahab by marrying Ahab’s daughter, Athaliah. Note that this merger was an arranged marriage that King Jehoshaphat decided on that was not right before God. It was this arranged marriage that King Jehoshaphat sinned and God told him “Must you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord?” Now the fruit of sin ripened during the time of King Jehoram. King Jehoram was influenced by his wife and so he walked in the ways of King Ahab and led the nation into sin, the exact opposite of what his father did. Jehoram killed his brothers in fear of any rival to the throne. Despite of his sins, it was written that God was not willing to destroy the house of David, not because of Jehoram but because of David. This is something that we ought to think about. Many times we wonder why the sin gets to live and why the righteous gets to die? Now we know the reason, it is for the sake of Jesus. Not because the wicked are strong or undefeated (just how they think they are that’s why they remain wicked) but because of the love of Christ! Because of what Jesus did on the cross - this is the reason why even to this day, the wicked remains living. The same way that King Jehoram’s reign or his lineage was not completely destroyed because of David! What an amazing love God has!
During the reign of Jehoram, 2 groups of people rebelled and won their independence from Judah. Edom and Libnah decided to stand up and rid themselves of Judah, making themselves a separate nation. Both were successful and even to this day, Edom is a separate nation from Judah. As King Jehoshaphat involved the people to do what is right, King Jehoram did the same thing but just the opposite of what is good. What a sad path this young King took...his evil ways were too much, too great that even Elijah, whose existence came into being to battle Ahab and Jezebel, even sent him a letter of warning of what lies before him because of his actions. Yet Jeroboam did not listen and so God’s wrath rose against him, bringing invaders (Philistines and the Arabs) into Judah and killed the King’s sons except for the youngest, Ahaziah, which is a fulfillment of God’s promise to David. Even after this, Jehoram did not humble down and so God afflicted him with an incurable disease of the bowels. Imagine a King, getting one of the most disgusting diseases. Even his disease was a symbol of how dirty he was. His death was not an easy one, it was in pure pain but the saddest part is that after he died, no funeral was ever made and he was not buried in the tomb of the kings. The same dishonor and disrespect he showed to God was given to him as the king of Judah. Truly a sad story for a young king :(
Clearly, God did everything to reach out to King Jehoram, even Elijah whose ultimate purpose was in the nation of Israel, was slightly diverted to the King of Judah, yet King Jehoram remained numb and deaf to God. Despite of everything that had happened, he lost in battles, his sons were killed, he lost his wealth, everything was taken from him, and even his own life, until its end, was suffering from an incurable and disgusting disease, still these things were not enough for the King to turn to God. Despite of God’s warnings, he decided to abandon God and so God abandoned him. Let us not commit the same mistake. Oh how horrible to be in Jehoram’s situation, to lose everything and to be in pain until the end of your life and even after death, the people you lead, did not even give the respect and honor a king deserves. What a shame.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, gracious and merciful Lord. I am so amazed that You are the reason why we are all still living today. Lord thank You for what You have done for us, it is becuase of You that we get to enjoy and live today. Lord, help me to realize this daily that i may be grateful at all times. Lord help me not to commit the same mistake as King Jehoram did. Let me be an instrument to bring Your people closer to You and not the other way around. Help me to follow the example of Jehoshaphat and learn from the life of Jehoram. Let this knowledge become useful not only for me but to whatever purpose You want it serve. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
