TITLE: Asa King Of Judah
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 14:1 - 15
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Asa, Abijah’s son, succeeded his father as King of Judah when Abijah died. And it is written in the Bible that there was peace for ten years in the reign of Asa. Why? Because Asa did what was right and good in the eyes of the Lord. He removed the foreign altars and the high places and commanded Judah, the same message David left for the whole nation, to seek God! So no man was at war with him for the Lord gave Asa rest. So when we seek God, we find rest from all the stress of our lives. When we are so deep with all the heavy weights we carry every day from work, from our relationship, from our lives, it’s time to seek God to find rest! During this resting time, God gave Asa the wisdom to build the city and put walls around them and they did so and prospered. Here we see that when we seek God and find rest in Him, God continues to work in us by building us and prospering us. So why choose to leave God when in seeking the Lord, we find not only rest but also prosperity and He builds us up too. Seeking God is truly beneficial for us! So start seeking the Lord daily. During this time when God was prospering and building them up as they seek and find rest in God, Zerah the Cushite marched up against them with an army of thousands upon thousands. Asa had 300,000 men from Judah only so they were outnumbered. But Asa, living in rest in God, did not panic or worry, instead he knew what just needed to be done. He called upon the Lord. I love Asa’s prayer in this chapter because he was in the middle of a crisis, just like his father Abijah, who was surrounded by Jeroboam when he was still alive. Abijah, fought for a call to reunite, Asa on the other hand, spent time resting n God and so when Zerah came to fight against them, he was no longer experienced in battle but his prayer spoke of the truth and God listened. Why? Let’s look at Asa’s prayer, first he recognized that they are weak, they have no power to win this battle, he said they were powerless...but he emphasized of who God is and magnify Him in this prayer. He said that God was the help of the powerless and that they are totally surrendered to Him for they have been resting in God as they seek Him all this time, so they are totally dependent on God. And he come in battle for God’s Name’s sake and not to any calling or any other name. Abijah fought and was driven by his calling to reunite the nation of Israel, Asa on the other hand, found for God’s Name. And so the Lord struck down the Cushite before Asa and Judah and they fled. Asa pursued them and they were crushed before the Lord and his forces. And they plundered the villages and destroyed all the villages around Gerar. So here we see victory that God Himself fought for. In Abijah’s war against Jeroboam, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah but in Asa’s war, God struck down the Cushites! What an amazing experience to have God literally fighting for you! Hallelujah!
