TITLE: Amaziah King of Judah

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 25:1 - 28 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Amaziah, the son of Joash became king of Judah at the age of 25.  He was young but he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.  He listened and obeyed but not wholeheartedly.  He was a law abiding king.  He murdered those who killed his father (those people killed Joash because Joash killed Zechariah, son of Jehoida the priest, and the people loved Jehoida).  But as you know, Amaziah was a law abiding king.  Even during the execution of his father’s murderers, Amaziah remained obedient to the law.  He only executed those who were guilty and let the other members of the family lived.  So this shows that Amaziah was taught the law and was obedient to it when he started his reign.  He was also trained in battle, he gathered the 20 years old and above men to be the king’s army.  So in a way, Amaziah was trained to rule in preparation for his role as the king of Judah.  So he was taught of the law and trained in battle and taught the importance of his army as the king of the nation.  So all these things he did, were based on what he knew and what he was trained for.  As he was preparing for battle, a man of God came and told him what he needs to do.  He was told that the troops from Ephraim (the soldiers he recruited for 100 talents of silver) must not march with him, for God is not with Israel.  Amaziah, willingly obeyed the man of God but note that before that, he asked the man of God, what about the 100 talents of silver he gave them.  This also shows what kind of king amaziah was.  He was concerned of the money he lost, he paid the men each for 100 talent of silver to fight with him but now, he is not going to use their service anymore becuase of what God said.  But God is great and His response was that He can give him more than what amaziah lost.  So Amaziah was also a man who doesn’t want to lose money.  So he obeyed and did what was said to him by the man of God.  Also note that Amaziah dismissed the troops but they were furious and went home in rage because of what he did.  So amaziah clearly was not thinking about the people (Ephraim) but really more on the 100 talents of silver he gave them when he asked the man of God about the talent that he paid them.  That’s why, when he dismissed them, the people were in rage.

So Amaziah along with the warriors of Judah went to the Valley of Salt where he killed 10,000 men of Seir and captured another 10,000 men.  While they were enjoying the victory God gave them over the men of Seir, the troops from Ephraim who felt cheated, raided towns belonging to Judah and killed 3,000 people and carried great quantities of plunder.  Meanwhile, Amaziah returned and brought back the gods of Seir and set them up as his own gods, bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them.  So God became angry and sent the man of God back to him, asking Amaziah, why he is consulting a god who was not even able to save his own people from him.  Amaziah interrupted the man of God and asked him (sarcastically), “Have we appointed you adviser to the king?” so the prophet stopped but said that God was determined to destroy him because of what he did and because he did not listen to the man of God.  I wonder what made Amaziah did what he did.  We know that he is a military man, a man who is concern of losing much, and doesn’t care much with the people.  According to my research, Seir was the land given to Edom/Esau as an inheritance by God.  And it is abundant with limestone caves...remember when Jacob came home and brought gifts to Esau?  Esau refused the gifts because God provided for him, we can conclude that Seir was an abundant land.  Possibly, we can reason that Amaziah saw the abundance of Seir and thought that their god may have caused that abundance so he took the god and made it his.  Again, this is just a mere logical human reasoning that i can think of, but whatever the real reason that made Amaziah did what he did, still does not justify his actions.  Clearly, he thought God provided him victory and maybe the god of Seir will give him wealth or abundance, forgetting that God already told him that God will give him more than what he lost from the troops (the 100 talents of silver he gave the men).  

Moving on, Amaziah became arrogant and proud because of that victory.  He thought that it was because of his own strength and that he doesnt need any help.  So he challenged the King of Israel, Jehoash.  Remember he was a law abiding king as well, and so he may thought that Jehoash and the whole Israel was a Rebellion nation and must be dealt with accordingly.  The law speaks of rebellion as sin.  So he challenged Jehoash, again thinking that he was doing what was right.  The funny thing is, Jehoash, even told him that he was becoming arrogant and proud and to just stay away.  Jehoash, warned him to stay away (I believe this is another of God’s intervention to Amaziah).  I mean, would you warn you enemy to back off especially when your enemy is challenging you for a fight?  Human nature won’t do so...so i believe this is God’s intervention or warning, yet Amaziah did not listen.  And so Amaziah was defeated... If his success against Edom was great because of obedience to God, his defeat was equally great as well because of his arrogance and pride.  He lived 15 years more than Jehoash but he fell onto the hands of his own people, because Judah conspired against him the moment he disobeyed God.  What a sad story.  Here we see another good to bad ending... And may his life become a lesson to us all.  The love of money, the love of one’s self, the love of victories, pride, arrogance...these are toxic that creep in to us and take roots if we don’t fill ourselves with the presence of the Lord.  May we continually seek Him daily that we will not have room for these toxics in our lives.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the life of Amaziah.  Help us Lord to remain humble and never feel that we can do things on our own.  Help us to be fully dependent on You alone.  Help me Lord to remember that many times my own knowledge is way far below Yours.  Help me to totally surrender and rely on You.  Help me to have a humble heart at all times and never think that i know better or that I am better!  You are the ONLY reason why I excel, why I succeed, why I become victorious.  Thank You Lord for everything.  I truly cannot live my life without You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
