TITLE: Jehoshaphat Defeats Moab and Ammon
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:1 - 37
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Chapter 20 of 2 Chronicles is one of the highlights of King Jehoshaphat’s reign. There was a rumor that 2 great nations teamed up to go against Judah and this cause people to worry/fear/alarmed. In verse 2 we see that some people came to Jehoshaphat to inform him of this rumor and the 2 nations were already on its way to Judah to attack when the King heard of it. So this caused the King to be alarmed as well but his first thought upon hearing this news is to inquire of the Lord as seen in verse 3. What an admirable trait from a King! A clear indication of total surrender to God. Most of the time when we are faced with huge troubles, we end up panicking and trying out best to find a solution instead of going directly to God in the first place. Note that the King was not facing just one problem, he is facing 2 great nations, who have teamed up together to rally up against him and when he heard of the news, these 2 kings already decided and started their journey to conquer and defeat them. Yet his first action was to fast and inquire of the Lord. How many of us today do the same? When things get worse, we usually want to do something. We want to act, find a solution, and do something to fix the issues. But how many of us can clearly say that when problems come, we stay put and stand still on God instead of keeping ourselves busy finding a solution? Now King Jehoshaphat did just that. He was alarmed of the news, yes, yet he didn’t allow that to divert his focus in seeking God for help and answers. May we follow his in dealing with our problems as well. Again, King Jehoshaphat is a leader/king who made his people get involved in almost everything. He proclaimed and declared for the people to fast as they inquire of the Lord of the matter. Most of us, when we face a problem that will impact our whole family, we usually keep it to ourselves and try to solve the issue on our own. But King Jehoshaphat was a transparent king to God’s people. He made sure everyone knows the law, everyone receives justice, and now, he made sure everyone is involved in waiting on God. Amazing! Let us again learn from this.
King Jehoshaphat’s prayer and his father. Asa, had similarities. King Asa prayed that God is the help of the powerless and that they rely on God alone, recognizing that they can do nothing and only God can. Now King Jehoshaphat prayed in verse 12 says, “...For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do but our eyes are on you.” - here King Jehoshaphat, despite of his armies, his wealth, his honor, his people, his warriors, said that they have no power to face the 2 nations and they don’t know what to do but their eyes are fix on Him! Hallelujah! Let this be our prayers daily, that we recognize our ability as nothing (total humility) and declare God as the only power or solution for whatever we are going thru.
God heard the King’s prayer and answered. When we are fully surrendered to God and we live uprightly, God hears us and answers us directly. Here we can see that God answered thru Jahaziel, a levite, as he stood in the assembly. The sweetest and most amazing response was heard that day. God said, the battle is not yours but mine! Do not be afraid, take your positions and make a stand and witness how I will fight for You! Amazing! I just paraphrase this but it seems God wants the people to see His power, His hand, His works. It’s like God wants to show off His majestic work in the lives of each individual taking their position in the time of battle. Know that when God spoke of this, there was no sign or concrete assurance that they will be victorious except God’s words. But the people of Judah, the King and eveyone believe and walk in faith the next day to battle. So they heard the word from God, they marched up to battle even if they know that they are outnumbered and weak. Clearly, an act of faith from the King and Judah. That’s why the next day, Jehoshaphat rallied his people up and inspired them to stand their position and believe in God. On the day of battle, the King only made 1 command and that is to praise God thru singing and lo and behold, all of Judah witness the destructions of the 2 nations. How many of us today, can ultimately do what Judah and the King did? They were about to face 2 major problems. They waited and inquired of the Lord instead of training or preparing for battle. Then they receive the word of God from a Levite who said that God will fight this battle for them. Despite of nothing but God’s words, they hold on to it and walk straight to the battlefield and sang! They went to a war but they ended up in singing instead of fighting. Then their enemies died. Now that;’s full faith. God activated their faith in Him. I believe everyone of them believe even though some had a hard time but the most important thing is that King Jehoshaphat believe in God. And so supernatural victory came! Again, the perks of seeking God first! Hallelujah! So Judah went to a battle but did not even get to use their weapons...all they used are their voices to sing praises to God, then they plundered their enemies. So they went to war, sing praises to God, and get rewarded. When facing our problems in life, know that sometimes, all we need to do is to sing praises to our King and the battle will be won! Then we get to enjoy the victory! This war also brought fear of God to the surrounding kingdoms of Judah, which then brought peace to them as God gave them rest on every side. Amen!
On the end of the chapter, it was noted that Jehoshaphat made another mistake of trusting an evil man, King Ahaziah (king of Israel). He went in business with the king of Israel so God destroyed whatever fruit there was in that union. So let us always remember that good has nothing to do with evil. We are to make that clear distinction in our lives!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, the Great I Am! Thank You for You fight our battles for us! Lord help me to seek You only at all times that I may rely on You always. Let me seek You first every time I received problems or troubles. Let my first action be is to inquire of You. Lord help me to make the people in my life be involved in reaching out to You for solutions to the problems we face. Help me to always sing Praises to You for every battle i Have is Yours. Lord thank You because in You, I receive supernatural victories and I plunder my enemies even if I didn’t do anything. Lord help me to identify good from evil and do not allow me to have any alliances to any evil that will lead to my destruction. Make me pure and right before You Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
