TITLE: Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 32 :1 - 33
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Here’s another amazing story in the life of King Hezekiah. Verses 1 to 23 shows the greatness of the Lord in the lives of His people. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, decided to invade Judah and was even successful in some part of Judah and he was thinking of conquering the whole land. When Hezekiah saw this, instead of preparing his army, he decided to strengthen their walls and cut the supply of water to the cities that were invaded. He did not fight back but he encouraged the people to be strong and courageous; not to be afraid from the vast army of Assyria and instead focus on the greater power they have with them, who is the Lord. Here we can see that King Hezekiah again confirmed to everyone that their battle is not of flesh and blood but the battle is the Lord’s and God will help them with their battles. The people were encouraged but King Sennacherib, determined to conquer the land of Judah, sent forth messenger to declare war and threaten the King and all people of Judah. Note that King Sennacherib knew the importance of instilling fear in the hearts of men so before even going to battle, he made sure that his messengers already planted seed of fear in the hearts of Judah and the King. King Sennacherib’s words included facts of his strength, his accomplishments and successes; his words also included the many other gods that were helpless in helping the other nations and so the God of Judah is just like the others. King Sennacherib’s words clearly echoed the greatness of his ability and strength and belittle whatever the people of Judah is holding onto, in this case, the Lord. Most of the time in our lives, Satan attacks in the same way. Showing us the greatness of our problems or hardships and belittling our faith...the enemy magnifies the troubles we have in life to divert our focus on how great our God is. So let us take note of this and be ready to face our battles daily. Be cautious of how our enemy operates so we don’t end up in his trap.
In this story however, God already knew what Sennacherib planned to do that’s why Hezekiah already encouraged the people even before Sennacherib sent his words to Judah. King Hezekiah already set in the hearts of the people that yes, Sennacherib has a large or huge or vast army, but greater is their God and He will fight their battles. So the people are already encouraged and set to the Lord so when Sennacherib sent his words, it was of no or little effect to them. That’s why instead of panicking, King Hezekiah and Isaiah cried out in prayer to heaven about this. And true indeed, God heard their prayer and sent His angels to struck down all the fighting men and commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. Amazing! God Himself fought for His people. Here we see another battle that God took over and won for His people. Another battle where the people just cried out, took position and stood before the Lord and God did everything; delivering them safely from the hand of their enemy. Know that in every battle we face in life, all we need is to be still in the presence of the Lord, and God will take over and fight the battle for us! Hallelujah! Truly Amazing!
The King of Assyria went to the temple of his god and there his sons killed and cut him down with the sword in the presence of his god. So the Lord took care of Hezekiah and Judah as they completely relied on Him in every battle. Becuase of this news, King Hezekiah was highly regarded and many other nations came to give him gifts.
King hezekiah’s reign was not without sin as we see the last few verses of this chapter showed that he became proud but in the end, humbled himself back to God. Let his life serve as a lesson to us all. Clearly, great riches, fame and power comes with a greater temptation of pride but in the end, like Hezekiah, we need to go back to God; humbling ourselves before Him always.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, what a great story King Hezekiah’s life was. A truly important lesson for us all. I know I can relate and somehow I can see his life very valuable to me as I have been a witness of the temptation of pride in my life. I know it has been one of my weaknesses and so Lord I am grateful for this lesson. Thank You Lord that all I have to do is seek You and cry out before You when I face my battle because, the truth is, it is not my battle but Yours. Remind me of this always so I will not struggle and end up fighting my own battles Lord. But always help me to remember that every battle I face is an opportunity for me to come before YOu and witness Your greatness in my life. Thank You Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
