TITLE: Ahaziah King of Judah

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 22,:1 - 12

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ The previous chapter spoke about King Jehoram’s sad story and this chapter narrates another sad story for his son, Ahaziah.  Ahaziah was the youngest son of Jehoram from Athaliah (the daughter of Jezebel and Ahab).  Athaliah’s influence over Jehoram and Ahaziah was too great that both men chose to walk in the ways of Ahab (evil ways) instead of their ancestors, Asa, Jehoshaphat and David.  As I ponder about this, this directs me to Athaliah who had been the common denominator between the two kings.  She was not like Jezebel, who was an obvious manipulator in the life of Ahab and was very determined to destroy Elijah, but Athaliah was definitely a silent but solid evil force in the midst of the chosen kings of God’s people.  Her influence was so strong that despite of what Ahaziah saw happened to his father (Jehoram) because of his evil ways, he still sided with his mother and continued with the evil reign.  Now, why would men do such a thing?  To clearly defy logic and choose to be blinded by the facts?  I believe Athaliah somehow provided satisfaction to some longings that these men yearn for and were not willing to give up.  Could it be love?  Or should i say, the wordly love where everything revolves around them?  I say this because even though Jehoram and Ahaziah were, let’s say deceived in the beginning, in the end, they made their decision and it seemed like, they were not willing to lose Athaliah on their side.  It could be that she nurtures their ego, present them with undying support and comfort masked as love, provide them with the attention and care they so long for, or possibly, give them whatever earthly desire they have, material things, food, lust, etc.  The point is, Athaliah or Jezebel in the case of Ahab, may have provided these men something that their earthly nature are addicted to.  That’s the only logical explanation i can think of but again, this is just me, my human mind thinking.  Of course when we’re talking about addiction, there’s always a supernatural force that comes with it.  So in a way, Jehoram, Ahaziah, and Ahab were all addicted to the women in their lives, like addiction, these women have such a powerful hold in their lives.  These women, coming from the same lineage, were built to be seductive, intelligent, beautiful, strong and independent.  They are the perfect description of the “today’s” version of empowered women.  Just some thoughts we ought to be thinking about as the women of today.

Anyway back to the story, so Ahaziah continued the evil ways of Ahab his grandfather.  He merged with King Joram, his uncle (Ahab’s son), and they went against the Arameans.  But Ahaziah was wounded and went to his uncle (King Joram) and that caused his downfall in the hands of Jehu, who was raised specifically for this purpose, the destruction of the house of Ahab.  Because of King Jehoshaphat, Ahaziah’s grandfather in the line of David, Ahaziah was buried.  Know that Evil is always meant to be destroyed!  

But what happened to the women?  Jezebel was killed and thrown down the window and that was the end of her.  But, Athaliah...oh not Athaliah, the daughter of Jezebel was not willing to give up that easily.  Being the mother of the recently dead king, she thought, why rule Judah beside a king when I can rule myself?  So she killed all the royal family under David’s lineage for Judah chose their King under David’s line, but God is amazing as always.  Jehosheba, Jehoram’s daughter (it does not say if she is Athaliah’s daughter or possibly she is the daughter of Jehoram from another wife), took Joash (son of Ahaziah, technically, Athaliah’s grandson) and hid him in the temple.  God is so amazing, that He chose Jehosheba to hid Joash, clearly God has planned it all.  Because Jehosheba walked in the ways of God, but not only that, she married Jehoiada, the priest, which set Joash’s path to God’s.  Isn’t this amazing?  I mean no matter how evil tries to infiltrate our lives, God has always set a plan ahead and has chosen specific people, incidents, situations or circumstances to perfectly fit ours and lead us back to Him.  Oh What a wonderful God we serve!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Amazing God!  Almighty Lord and Great I Am!  I am short of words to give and proclaim Your greatness!  I know I cannot fully described Your glory for my words will just limit it.  But Lord, You truly are wonderful and amazing!  I am so blessed with how You touch my life every day.  I am in awe of Your greatness at all times.  And I want to sing out, if only I have the voice of an angel, I wont be ashamed to raise my voice so loud.  But Lord, truly when you love someone, your heart beat beats so loud because that’s what i feel when I fear You make these amazing surprises for me.  Anyway, I want to say thank You!  Thank You Lord for Your goodness and love each day.  And this revelation of the life of King Ahaziah, Athaliah and Jehosheba and many others just confirms Your everloving heart for me.  Thank You God for loving me.  For setting everything ahead to lead me back to You.  Let me be directed to the path where You are always.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
