TITLE: Jehoshaphat King of Judah

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 17:1 - 19

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After King Asa, Jehoshaphat his son inherited the throne.  Jehoshaphat was one of the kings who made history for he followed the ways of David.  So he was not inconsistent like Rehoboam and Abijah, he was not like his father who was only good at the start, but instead, he learned from them and followed the ways of David.  And because of this the Lord was with him.  This chapter enumerated what Jehoshaphat did that defined him as a king who followed the ways of David.  What are these? 

1) He did not consult with Baal but sought the God of his father, Asa - so Jehoshaphat sought the Lord, himself, and relied on God alone.  Now this speaks of humility.  Remember that during the time of Asa, Asa made a new covenant with God and made the people choose whom to serve and I believe Jehoshaphat, his son, was one of them.  And so Jehoshaphat had a renewed covenant with God to seek the Lord and His ways.  Jehoshaphat honored this covenant and indeed, consulted God in everything he did.  So he was not satisfied with 2nd hand blessings too, he went directly to the source and get his portion from God firsthand.  Because of this, God established the kingdom under his control.  

2) He followed God’s commands rather than the practices of Israel - Jehoshaphat based everything into God’s words/law instead of what their culture or tradition or society thinks.  So Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was not ruled using rationality, instead it was ruled supernaturally.  And because of this, great wealth and honor was upon him.  Verse 5 of this chapter says that all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat so that he had great wealth and honor.  Who, in his right humanly mind would give money to someone without reason?  Let alone give money WILLINGLY to a King, a man in the highest position!  If you reread the chapter, they give for the King, not even for God, not even for the kingdom, not even for the temple of the Lord, it was specifically for the King, for Jehoshaphat. Know that following God’s words means living in the supernatural and so you get blessings supernaturally as well.  I mean, Jehoshaphat did not ask the people to give him their wealth, he did not command them to give a portion of what they own to the him or the kingdom, yet the people themselves gave willingly to him.  Now that’s supernatural!  The truth is, giving, especially when we speak about money is one of the hardest things to do even to this day.  Because money supports life and when people thinks rationally, giving is done to receive...so when people give they give only when they know they get something in return - this is human logic.  But since Jehoshaphat ruled Judah thru God’s words/commands, his reign was supernatural.  So the people gave supernaturally for the King, without even thinking of getting anything in return.  It was a pure gift for the King.  Now only God can make that happen!  Only His words/commands can make that possible!

3) His heart was devoted to the ways of the Lord - Jehoshaphat, I believe, learned from the life of his father, Asa.  He saw God’s hands working in Asa when Asa sought the Lord, and Jehoshaphat may have witnessed ASa’s last years when he was too proud to humble himself before God.  He knew that God was against other idols and high places and when Asa removed them initially, God was pleased (note that Asa did not remove every high places - remember the verse when Asa’s grandmother was mentioned in 2 chronicles 15:16-17 says, “...Although he did not remove the high places from Israel...”) and so he continued the good thing that his father did.  But not only that, Jehoshaphat, was also driven by a calling.  He was not contented of just knowing the truth to himself, he wants the whole nation to know it too.  So he made sure that everyone knows it - this is how devoted he was to the ways of the Lord.  He sent officials, levites, and priests around the whole nation to speak and teach about the law, ensuring that everyone is knowledgeable of what is right!  Now that’s what i call true devotion!  When you are soaked in God, you cannot contain the truth in you, you will always have the drive in you to share the truth.  The same way when we are in love or in deep trouble, we seek for someone to share it with.  It’s the same with God.  Knowing Him and His truth is amazing, too amazing that our hearts and minds will explode if we keep our silence.  His truth is too good to be kept in us, your heart, your mind, your mouth, everything in you, will drive you mad when the truth is kept hidden in you.  IT MUST BE RELEASE!  It MUST BE SHARED!  IT MUST BE TAUGHT!  IT MUST BE SPOKEN! And when Jehoshaphat did so, his power grew.  Note that fear of the Lord among the surrounding nations in Judah increased when the Word was spread throughout Judah.  Actually, i find it interesting that the Word was shared in Judah yet the fear of the Lord fell on the surrounding nations, isn’t it interesting?  So when we are filled with God’s words or simply put, filled with His Spirit, even the people around us or anyone who come in contact with us, recognize our Lord!  So truly, our lives represent God’s power, God’s glory, and God’s honor.  And people around us will know Him and fear Him when they see God’s greatness in us!  So live accordingly to God’s words!  

Also note that when Jehoshaphat did all these: when he sought the Lord, followed His words and devoted himself to God’s ways, Jehoshaphat grew in power and not only that, people come to volunteer their service to God- again another supernatural action!  Verse 16 says that Amasiah son of Zikri, volunteered himself for the service of God with 200,000.  Isn’t it true that the workers are few?  Yet when we seek God, follows His words and devote ourselves to His ways, we get those volunteer workers just like that.  Now that’s supernatural!  So all of them were of service to God yet in verse 19, it says, they served the king.  So let’s not waste time today, let’s seek God, follow His words, and just devote ourselves to His ways!  Let it be our passion and commitment.  Seeking requires intimacy, Following God’s words require us reading His words, devoting ourselves to His ways requires getting rid of all sins (pride, envy, unforgiveness, hate, etc ).  So build your relationship with God by developing your devotional time with Him in prayer and in the reading of His words and living life right before Him.  Don’t wait for tomororrow - Start today!
