TITLE: Athaliah and Joash

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 23:1 - 21 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 23 is a victory story!  When Athaliah succeeded in becoming the Queen of Judah, little did she know that there’s one more son in the line of David that she failed to annihilate.  Joash, who was saved by his Aunt and raised in the temple, was only 7 years old when Jehoida, the priest who took care of him decided to reveal his identity and take back what was rightfully his.  Jehoida had a major influence in the life of Joash in his walk in God’s path and God made sure that after Jehoram, Ahaziah and the house of Ahab destroyed, the next king is set to do what is right.  So Joash grew up in the guidance of Jehoida, the priest.  The announcement and declaration of Joash as king of Judah was not an easy one.  They were all doing their best to walk in secret to avoid Athaliah from knowing what was really going on.  The guards, the levites, the priests, etc...were all watching their every step and move and they were successful as God was with them in the whole process.  They were all in one Spirit in making Joash the king of Judah.  Athaliah was blindsided yet despite of that, she didn’t go down easily.  She tore her robes and shouted “Treason!” pointing her finger to Joash and the rest as if they were the enemy in this story.  Many times, our human nature easily puts the blame to someone else when things go wrong.  But in reality, everything that happens to us, is more often the cause of our own doing.  Athaliah took what does not belong to her and she took it forcibly, killing everyone in the way of getting what she wants.  But like Athaliah, when we are blindsided, we tend to feel the victim and easily put the blame on those who took a stand against us.  But in this story, the power has shifted and Jehoida called for her execution outside the temple and Athaliah was slain with the sword and everyone rejoiced! 

I’m sure that Athaliah, because of her greed for power, did what she did.  We can try to understand and see things the way Athaliah saw it, yet it still won’t justify her actions.  I believe Athaliah was a woman raised with an addiction to power.  She had the best model in this evil way from her mother who did everything to keep her husband in power including fighting one of the most powerful prophet of the Lord.  So Athaliah grew to be just like her mother and even more.  She was addicted to power and did everything to have it.  She has no clear understanding of what is right or what is moral.  All she knows was that as someone in royalty, power is everything.  So she was blinded by it and did the most unimaginable thing a human can do, let alone a woman in her stature.  But Athaliah live a life that is not secluded or unexposed to the truth.  She married Jehoram, who was a direct descendant of David and she lived with him in the city of David where people openly practice their beliefs.  She may have been exposed to the truth yet her loyalty to her Baal worship was solid, and again this she inherited from her mother too.  Again this does not justify her actions or decisions.  In our lives, there are certain culture, traditions, and practices that we are taught since birth and it’s hard to let go of those especially when our minds have been condition for these to be the right things.  But remember to always seek the truth, God will not allow you to be secluded and unexposed to His word.  God will find a way to bring your life directly to His and when that time comes, don’t shut it down like Athaliah.  Let us open our heats and minds to the truth.  Athaliah’s wrong decisions in life is brought by her ignorance to the truth.  Her life is the tragic story of ignorance.  May we walk the other path and learn from Queen Athaliah’s life.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You are worthy of all praises and honor!  Thank You because You have set everything in according to Your will.  I am amazed and grateful that my life is set in accordance to You plans and not my own.  Thank You because at a young age, You exposed me to the truth and even to this day, You still continue to reveal secrets and treasures of Your truth to me daily.  May i always hunger to seek and know You more Lord because I want to live in the truth.  Lord help me not to fall in the same path that Athaliah took.  Many times, when we know a lot of things, we tend to think that we know it all and so we are not open to new knowledge.  May i not fall in that trap Lord.  Help me to always have a humble heart and a teachable one when it comes to Your truth.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
