TITLE: The Dedication of the Temple

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 7:1 - 22

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God. The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the Lord’s musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the Lord and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, “His love endures forever.” Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing. Solomon consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the Lord, and there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar he had made could not hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat portions. So Solomon observed the festival at that time for seven days, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath to the Wadi of Egypt. On the eighth day they held an assembly, for they had celebrated the dedication of the altar for seven days and the festival for seven days more. 10 On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their homes, joyful and glad in heart for the good things the Lord had done for David and Solomon and for his people Israel.

NOTES:

> What Solomon did after he prayed for the dedication of the temple amazed me.  It was written in the Bible that the King who was chosen to be in authority and to build God a magnificent temple, was not only involved in the building process, meaning he was literally hammering or shaping wood, bronze, etc together with the workers but at the end of the task, in the dedication, as the leader of the people, he was also doing the heavy lifting during the dedication.  Imagine the King, the highest human leader of the chosen nation of God, offered sacrifices of 22,000 head of cattle and 120,000 sheep and goats!  This is hard labor i believe, though i’ve never tried doing this but definitely, this requires all your strength and to think, Solomon sacrificed not just one but 22,000 cattles and 120,000 sheep and goats.  Wow!  And this was done by a King, the highest human leader!  This clearly shows humility and honor for God from Solomon and the whole nation.  Today, it seems like when the person is in the high position, they do less labor, while the servants to everything.  It was true in the past too but when it comes to God, the highest person in authority must do most of the labor, not that God is a slave driver but because the highest authority of the nation represents the whole people and it brings honor and glory to God that the highest person in authority pays respect and do what’s needed for the Lord.

→ When Solomon had finished the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple of the Lord and in his own palace, the Lord appeared to him at night and said: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices. “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, f my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. “As for you, if you walk before me faithfully as David your father did, and do all I command, and observe my decrees and laws, I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to rule over Israel.’ “But if you[a] turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you[b]and go off to serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given them, and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. I will make it a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. This temple will become a heap of rubble. All[c] who pass by will be appalled and say,‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why he brought all this disaster on them.’”

NOTES:

> What a sweet response from the Lord.  God, Himself, appeared to Solomon at night!  It was the most intimate and sweetest response ever!  God appeared to Solomon and only to Solomon to give His response and God’s response was, “I have heard your prayer..” not the prayer of His people, not the prayer of the priest, but Solomon’s prayer and God chose this temple so that God’s Name may be there forever!  Whether Solomon and the people chose to obey or not, God’s Name will be known in that place.  Amazing!  What a lovely and sweet response.  Solomon’s hardwork or project, the temple, will become a place where God’s Name will dwell forever.  Whether the people obeyed and disobeyed Him, God chose for this place where His Name will always be remembered!  What an honor that is?!  Wow!  

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, great is Your Name and the only Name to be praised over all heaven and earth!  Lord thank You because You have shown me one of Your sweetest response to us.  You do long for intimacy that You chose to appear before Solomon at night instead of speaking to Him during the day with the crowd.  Oh what a great sight.  Lord thank You because You want to be intimate with me.  I am so blessed and moved with this.  I know this already but it’s as if I’m hearing it for the first time that I am excited to have learn this.  Lord I am amazed of the honor You gave to Solomon’s work (the temple) that You have decided to make Your Name dwell on that place despite of what decision Solomon make in his life.  You are truly true to Your word and promises that even to this day, Your Name dwells in what is left of this magnificent temple in Israel.  Praise Your Name and glory all to You alone.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
