TITLE: Uzziah King of Judah
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 26:1 - 23
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Uzziah was Amaziah’s son and was 16 years old only when he became king. Wow, what such tremendous change in his life. At a very young age, he was subject to a position that I believe he was not prepared to. But with the right guidance and help, he was able to do what was right before God. I don’t but with the stories i’ve been reading chapter after chapter, i noticed that men somehow, inherited their father’s ways, unless they make a huge decision to walk the other path their father took. In the care of Uzziah, he followed his father even to the point of nurturing his pride. Amaziah became proud and arrogant, well, perhaps Uzziah was young to fully understand what was happening to his father or what caused his father’s downfall. And so Uzziah, fell into the same trap of pride. Zechariah was Uzziah’s major influence in doing what was right before God and as long as he sought the Lord, God gave him successes in everything. We can see that God gave him victory over the Philistines, Arabs, Meunites. The Ammonites even brought him tribute and his fame spread as far as Egypt because he became very powerful. But normally, pride comes along power and Uzziah was not prepared to meet pride. We can also see that God made Judah progressive: gates, towers, and cisterns were made and Uzziah was very productive when it comes to agriculture - it’s his passion. God also built him a strong army, complete with the latest gears and equipments and weaponry and defense. Technology was also progressing as Uzziah had devices invented for use on the towers and on the corner defenses. Many people helped him greatly until he became very powerful, suddenly, pride came knocking at his door and he was caught off guard as he opened the door and allowed it to come in. His pride led to his downfall, which made him unfaithful to God. He disrespected the Lord by burning incense to God in the temple when this is performed specifically by the priest only as instructed by God Himself. His pride like Saul, thought that he could do just about anything because he is powerful. Speaking of, this made me realize that there are specifics that we are unable to do. All of us were made for a purpose and we have a specific task. If we decide not to do our task, God will have someone else do it for us however if pride leads us to think that since we are powerful and close enough to the Lord, we can do just about anything, even the things that God clearly set for someone else to do, then this is no longer pleases the Lord. I believe that the reason why God was not please was not because Uzziah didnt know the proper way of burning the incense or he didn’t do the task exactly how the priest did it. I believe he did it perfectly that’s why he was angry when he was reprimanded by Azariah the priest with 80 other courageous priest. I think it was more of his heart and his purity. God is pure and He does not associate with sinner. The Levites were specifically consecrated for this purpose but the king was not. The Levites were cleanse so they can come into the presence of the Lord, the king was not. So it’s a matter of God’s glory and not on man’s performance. That’s why, King Uzziah received leprosy while he was still in the temple and he had to be rushed out of the temple. He was banned until his death to go to the temple because he was unclean. It was sad that he started right but ended up on the other side of the force just like his father.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, gracious and loving Father. Thank You for the life of Uzziah. Thank You Lord because You have taught me that pride leads to my downfall. I know myself Lord and I do have the tendency to be proud that’s why I humbly ask Lord that You take away whatever pride or self-focus or selfishness I have in me that will lead me to think of myself as better than anyone else. Lord always remind me that I am nothing without YOu. Lord I do not want to go thru what Uzziah had to go thru. I want to be fully in obedience to You and when I seem to be walking the opposite path of humility, pull me back Lord and always remind me of Your goodness, Your greatness, and Your love at all times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
