TITLE: Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 19:1 - 11
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ The first 3 verses of this chapter really caught my attention, especially what Jehu (the seer) told King Jehoshaphat in verse 2. His words from the Lord were... “Should you help the wicked and love[a] those who hate the Lord? Because of this, the wrath of the Lord is on you.”Today, God has been pouring out His Grace to everyone. Grace as the unmerited favor from God, that comes with mercy. But Grace is also just and the truth! It does not go with sin nor does it tolerate it! Grace does not allow or give sin permission to exist. In reality, Grace casts them away. That’s why Jehu said, “Must you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord?” this is powerful because some people think that we must understand the sinners and I’m not saying that we shouldn’t, we should! But it does not make their sins okay. Living in Grace does not mean it’s okay to sin because God is gracious and merciful, He will forgive us with our sins and wipe it out anyway - that’s not how Grace works! In these 3 verses, we can see that God corrected Jehoshaphat in this area. We know that Jehoshaphat was good by nature, he chose to be good by nature but it doesn’t mean that he should tolerate and allow sin to dwell, thinking that he had to understand man’s struggles and weaknesses. NO! With Grace comes power to get rid of sin! That’s why Jehu said that the wrath of God is on Jehoshaphat because he was helping (which is a good action) Ahab do something bad - this definitely is not right! But as you can see, God said that Jehoshaphat “some good in him” so it’s possible that Jehoshaphat believe that helping Ahab was the right thing to do but he was wrong. So we have to be careful and must fill our minds with the right perspective of what is right and wrong by reading God’s words so we won’t end up like Jehoshaphat who was a victim of his good choices. But the best thing about Jehoshaphat, like David, he learned from his mistakes. In the succeeding verses, we can see that he went to the people and turned them back to God. He appointed judges in the land and warned them to consider what they do and to always have fear in the Lord for He is just! What I like about Jehoshaphat is that every time he learns from his mistakes or every time he learned something valuable, he made sure that everyone knows it and he not only applied it to himself but to the people under him. When he sought the Lord and followed God’s commands, he made sure that the whole nation are aware of God’s words so they themselves would follow them. Now, when he learned from his mistakes with Ahab, he appointed judges to ensure that justice is served to the whole nation. And the judges he appointed wereLevites who knows the law of God. What an amazing King! He took his responsibility and role as king to heart. He not only took care of his own personal walk with God, but he made sure to guide the people in that same right path! Let us learn from him and do the same because God brought the people under us for a reason. We are leaders in their eyes for a purpose! Let’s make sure we fulfill our purpose as God has designed us to be.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, amazing God, wonderful Saviour. I am so amazed of what You did in Jehoshaphat’s life. Today I learned to understand my purpose deeper. Everything you taught me is not just for myself. I am to passed it on and share it with the people around me because Your word is too valuable to be kept hidden inside one person. Lord help me to always fulfill the purpose You have set in my life. Help me Lord to share and not keep silent. Give me the courage to deliver Your message in the best way You want it delivered across to the people You brought into my life. Remind me to be like Jehoshaphat to always choose to share the knowledge acquired from You to others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
