TITLE: Micaiah Prophesies Against Ahab

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 18:1 - 34

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 18 shows that we need to guard ourselves and be cautious of every decisions we make.  Not all humanly good decisions are right or not all act of kindness is good!  King Jehoshaphat whom the Bible defined as a King walking in the ways of David, received great wealth and honor because God is with him.  Yet because of his “overly good” heart, he allied himself with King of Ahab of Israel, who is known to be an evil king...too evil that King Ahab was described to have done “MORE” evil than Jeroboam who was instrumental on the division of Israel.  King Jehoshaphat’s alliance with King Ahab is through marriage and when he came to King Ahab in Samaria, King Ahab treated him nicely by preparing a feast for him and his people.  So when King Ahab asked him to go with him against Ramoth Gilead, he was too kind or in debted to King Ahab to refuse.  His response was a payment of King Ahab’s kindness to him.  King Jehoshaphat may have acted out of the kindness of his heart in helping King Ahab but it was not the right thing to do.  But as we read on, King Jehoshaphat was being careful to do the ways of God because as we learned in the previous chapter, he was devoted in God’s ways.  So he told King Ahab to inquire of the Lord first and so Ahab did from the false prophets.  When King Ahab told King Jehoshaphat of what his prophets said, King Jehoshaphat was still not convinced, most likely it was the Spirit of God warning or giving him the sensitivity that this was not right, so he asked King Ahab to inquire of another prophet, one whom the Spirit of God is found.  So King Ahab did what King Jehoshaphat asked - making it harder for King Jehoshaphat to say no to him because King Ahab did everything he asked for (another part of the whole trap process).  Isn’t this true?  Most of the time, when someone showed us kindness, in a way, we are obliged to do good to that person too.  And even if our whole being says no, because of this sense of debt, the “because he is good to me, I will be good to him too ” mentality, we oftentimes trapped ourselves into doing things that we ended up regretting.  Now that’s what happened to King Jehoshaphat in this story.  Instead of standing firm and saying “No” in the first place, he trapped himself into doing what King Ahab wants by asking King Ahab to do other things that made it harder for him to say no to King Ahab in the end.  He was carrying this burden in his heart to King Ahab so when King Ahab asked him to fight Ramoth Gilead with him, he cannot refuse.  There are many of us like King Jehoshaphat today.  Those who are too good to say no or refuse someting.  Those who feel like saying No means being Bad or being insensitive to the needs of others.  Oh no, my friend, don’t fell into that trap.  Let King Jeroboam’s story serves us a lesson to us, especially to those who choose to be “good” by nature.  Remember that not all act of kindness is good or right.  An act of Kindness can be the enemy’s trap for us to do exactly what he wants us doing.  Let us be cautious and be on guard always for this.  Moving on, King Jehoshaphat fell into the trap and though Micaiah already warned King Ahab that the prophesies were cause by lying spirits in the mouth of the prophets, King Ahab, as the evil king that he is, decided to do what he wants rather than listen and King Jehoshaphat was dragged into his plans with him.  So they went and Micaiah was imprisoned for telling the truth to the King.

Despite of King Jehoshaphat’s mistake, God did not hold it against him.  In fact, when King Jehoshaphat was cornered because of King Ahab’s plan, he cried out to God and God heard him and rescued him.  Amazing Grace and love from the Lord, once again is showed to Jehoshaphat in this story.  Despite of his wrong decision, his heart was leaning towards good yet his decision was still a mistake.  But when he cried to God, God immediately came to help!  Oh what a wonderful God we have!  Our sins, He does not consider when we humble ourselves and get down on our knees to call upon Him.  Hallelujah!  Thank You Jesus.

As for King Ahab, he got what he deserve.  He was being clever and disguised himself so Ramoth Gilead will not pursue him, he set King Jehoshaphat as a decoy and again, out of the “overly good” heart of Jehoshaphat, even though, he already knew that he was a decoy, he still agreed to it.  Tsk tsk tsk...clearly King Jehoshaphat needed to learn to say NO.  Anyway, despite of this humanly-clever plan of King Ahab, it backfired on him.  For God helped King Jehoshaphat and a random soldier drew his bow and hit King Ahab and so he died.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, clearly You are just and great is Your love and grace upon us.  I want to say I am amazed of the valuable lessons You teach me every day.  This time, I have a clear insight of the danger of being Mr or Ms overly goodie person.  Truly, anything beyond limit is not good.  Lord, I know I am guilty of this.  Because I choose to be good by nature (which I continually learn to fulfill - still in progress) as I choose You always and I have the tendency to do good to a point that I drag myself into a trap of doing things I don’t like or making wrong decisions.  Lord help me to stand firm in You and to learn how to say NO when necessary.  I don’t want to be in the same position as Jehoshaphat who was trapped into doing something he didnt want to do in the first place because he didnt know how to say NO.  Lord help me to understand that what is right is based on You and not on the kindness shown to be by someone.  Help me to be sensitive enough to identify what is right and wrong even in situations when it’s hard to refuse because of the kindness and goodness that was shown to me.  Help me to stand firm in You and choose Your option always.  Make me aware when I am in this kind of situation and remind me about Jehoshaphat’s story when needed so I may make the right choices.  In Jesus’ Name Amen!
