TITLE: Asa’s Reform

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 15:1 - 19

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ This chapter shows the intimacy of God to King Asa.  It started with the Spirit of God coming on Azariah, son of Obed, and met with Asa to tell him what the Lord says.  I say that God was intimate with Asa because it has been a while that I read God talking to someone about His words, especially the words about the other side.  Israel was divided into two: Israel and Judah.  King Asa was the king of Judah but God spoke to him and told him first that the Lord is with him when he is with Him.  Then God proceeded by telling King Asa about Israel.  God said that Israel, in their distress had turned to the Lord.  They were without the True God for some time now and without a priest to teach them and without the law as well.  So God confirmed to Asa that without him, distress and troubles follow.  That’s what happened to Israel during these times - this is the time when Jeroboam never regained power and there was chaos in Israel because a commander murdered the whole family line of Jeroboam (this is when God’s words to Jeroboam came to pass, because of the evil that Jeroboam did, God brought judgment and fulfilled His words against them).  Then God proceeded by assuring Asa that what he is doing is right and he will be rewarded.  What an intimate conversation it was.  God started with assurance then gave Asa choice, then presented him the consequence of his action if he chooses to disobey, then ended it with assurance of reward.  God even used literal examples so Asa would see and understand the nature of his decision or choice (using Israel as an example to give emphasis to God’s message to him).  It was so clear that when Asa heard those words and the prophecy, it gave him courage.  He was determined and decided to side with the Lord and so immediately, he removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin.  Then he assembled everyone in his kingdom, consecrate them by offering sacrifices and presented them with the same choice to serve God.  Those who choose not to serve God were put to death.  They all entered into a new covenant with God or should i say a renewed covenant of seeking God with all their hearts and soul.  And so they all sought God and found Him in them so they were given rest by God Himself.  King Asa was recorded in this chapter as fully committed to the Lord all his life and so there was no more war until the 35th year of King Asa’s reign.

The key I believe in King Asa’s reign of peace is his seeking with God.  But seeking is not merely finding or hearing or knowing but it is about acting on what you know!  Seeking God is a decision to make and in seeking God, rest is found.  King Asa was presented with a vivid or tangible example when God gave him the choice to serve God and so without a doubt, Asa chose the Lord.  When the decision was made, King Asa transformed all under his power.  The people, the land, the nation - he took actions that showed his allegiance to God.  Ridding of what is not of His.  So in our choice to seek God, we have to make a decision, then that decision will lead us to act (riding ourselves of all sins), then offering sacrifices before God, praising and worshiping the only true God!  So we decide to serve God, we act on it by ridding ourselves with sins, we offer sacrifice by presenting ourselves as the living sacrifice, and we enter in covenant with Him declaring our choice to seek Him wholeheartedly.  This is what King Asa and Judah did and God gave them rest and was found in them.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus amazing and wonderful Lord.  I want to be in a covenant of seeking You in my whole life on earth.  I ask for the privilege of seeking and knowing who You are in my life God.  Lord I also pray that You reveal the kings in my life today but ultimately Lord, let me always seek You as the Only and True King of my life.  I make a decision today to make You the Only person I will rely on and help me Lord to act on this decision as I know I will not be strong enough to pursue this on my own.  I need Your strength and guidance to make this my life’s mantra.  Let me always be under Your protection and rest.  In Jesus’ Name, amen!
