TITLE: Joash Repairs The Temple
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 24:1 - 27
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Chapter 24 speaks of the importance of a “discipler”! Joash, son of Ahaziah, was only 7 years old when he became king and he was too young, so Jehoida, the priest, ruled the kingdom with him. Joash did what was right in the eyes of God with Jehoida’s guidance, all the time when Jehoida was still alive. Because of the kindness and love of Jehoida, Joash grew up walking the path to the Lord. Joash even took the role of restoring the temple of the Lord. Something to note in this chapter is that the king told the levites and the priest to collect the money needed for the restoring of the temple, yet the levites did not act at once. So the King summoned Jehoida and made a command to make a chest made and placed outside the gate of the temple of the Lord so the people can bring their tax to the temple. It seems like it is not the levites or the priests’ role to demand or remind the people of what they need to give for the Lord, in this story, it seems like that was the King’a role. When the king spoke, everyone came and gave their contributions and not just that, it says in verse 10 that they brought their contributions GLADLY! Even in the time of David, Samuel did not require the people to give for the building of the temple, it was David who gave out that command. Moses on the other hand, was leading without a king and so he was acting as both the king and the priest during that time. Anyway, just something to note about.
So the people gave their contributions gladly and both the king and Jehoida gave the money to those who carried out the work of restoring the temple. The workers were diligent and the progress of the work was consistent. The remaining money they used to build articles for the service and burnt offerings. All these things were done under king Joash and the high priest Jehoida. Speaking of teamwork! Jehoida did a wonderful work in setting a good and righteous path for Joash that Joash was able to rule the Lord’s kingdom right in the eyes of the Lord. Jehoida was loved by the people because of what he did and so he was so far the priest i know that was burred in the king’s tomb in the city of David. He was buried with royalty, a burial fit for a king because of his work in the life of Joash.
However, when Jehoida died, Joash was led astray by the officials of Judah. Joash was so used to having Jehoida by his side that when he died, I believed he looked for someone to replace Jehoida’s place. He wants to rule the kingdom with a partner(s) and he partnered with the wrong people. Joash’s wickedness was shown and the Lord got angry. God’s Spirit came to Zechariah, Jehoida’s son, to warn the king and the people, but Jehoida, totally consumed by evil, killed Zechariah without even remembering the good that Zechariah’s father had shown him. Many times when we are consumed by evil, we tend to forget or become blind of what is good. All we see is the bad side of things and so we make decisions based on that. Poor Zechariah, his death impacted the people too that when Joash was severely wounded when the Arameans came to attack them, his own people killed him because of Zechariah. The sad thing is, he was buried in the city of DAvid but not in the king’s tomb. This story clearly showed that Jehoida was treated more of a king of the people rather than the king himself. Truly, when we do what God has called us to do and His Name is gloried, together with that, we are also lifted up! Hallelujah!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus thank You for the wisdom and the knowledge of the valuable lesson for today. Lord help me to never be too dependent with anyone but allow me to become dependent on You alone. Help me to help and become a good discipler but not to the point that my disciples are too dependent on me. I want to live a life like Jehoida, who was able to impact someone’s life to the right path but I don’t my disciples to end up like Joash who was led astray the moment, i’m gone. Help me to teach them goodness and love that comes only from You and the importance of seeking You always. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
