TITLE: Manasseh King of Judah
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 33:1 - 25
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ I am truly blessed with this chapter, the life of King Manasseh. I’ve been focused on the stories of the Kings Judah and I noticed a pattern which I told the Lord about a few weeks ago. I noticed that most of the Kings’ story start from them being either good then fell into evil or they started evil until the end. It seems to be the pattern of their story and I asked God to show me a story of a bad King who came back good until the end of his life...and the story of Manasseh is God’s personal answer. Thank You Lord. So King Manasseh started his reign at 12 years old. Just imagine how you were when you were 12? At that time, it was the start of my relationship with the Lord however let’s face it, at 12, we were all young, immature and selfish. I met the Lord at that age but i was not perfect and was just beginning my transformation to God’s purpose for me. It was not easy and it took a very long while, even to this day, I am still a work in progress. Anyway, so here we have Manasseh at 12 years old receiving such great power and wealth. He had so many advisers yet no one was able to lead him to the path that his father took in serving God. He was confused and evil. He enjoyed the fame and was focus on selfish ambition. He knew that there’s a higher power but he just didn’t know who it was. So he served just any masters he thought was the right god. And together with him, he led Judah to the same evil practices. Because of his evil ways, God delivered them to the hands of the King of Assyria, the same nation whom God fight and defeated when his father, King Hezekiah, was still the reigning king. So it was a slap in the face to be defeated by a nation whom your father destroyed or God destroyed for his father and his people’s sake. But Manasseh did not learn from his mistakes and so he was captured and made prisoner, put a hook in his nose (symbolizing he is a slave to the king of Assyria) and put bronze shackles on him. So here we have a king turned into a slave. What a terrible experience and a humbling one too for King Manasseh. This experience brought him to the Lord and he prayed a very sincere prayer that it touched God’s heart. I found a copy of Manasseh’s prayer from the Early Jewish writing (http://www.earlyjewishwritings.com/text/manasseh.html), and clearly you can see that his prayer comes from a humble heart. Manasseh’s prayer highlights the greatness and glory of the Lord, centered on the Lord’s great mercy and favor and love and power. Then he asked for forgiveness and again highlighted on how God is a forgiving God then ended it with a promise that because of God’s forgiveness, he will praise God forever. So the highlight of Manasseh’s prayer is the Lord! And this touched God’s heart so He delivered Manasseh and all of Judah from the hand of their enemy. You can see also in this chapter that Manasseh’s humble prayer was not an act. It was sincere because after they were rescued by the Lord, Manasseh just like his father Hezekiah, got rid of all the gods or images he made and restored the temple back. His was a true repentance as there was action and a complete change of heart and mind afterward. Now this is repentance is about... Not just in words but must be combined with actions and commitment. What an amazing story from bad to good or evil to good! Hallelujah! Praise be to God!
On another note, Amon, son of Manasseh became king and was the king for a very short period of time. He was 22 when he was crowned the King of Judah yet after 2 yeas, he was killed for he did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not learn from his father’s story. What a sad event...his son Josiah became his successor.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, amazing God and wonderful Saviour. I am amazed and in awe of Your wondrous love and grace poured out to us each day. Truly they are new every morning. Lord thank You for this great story and lesson to learn again. Lord I want to be like Manasseh who when he made a decision to come back, made it with full commitment. He was not a double minded person. He came to his sense and learned from his mistakes. And when he decided to come back to You, he did it with his full commitment until the end of his life. May i have the same heart and commitment Lord. Thank You for showing me Manasseh’s story and I don’t want to experience or wait until I am at my lowest point to humble down and come back to You Lord like Manasseh. But I want to be like Manasseh who made a decision and commitment to it..and I made that decision already, I just need to follow through and keep it up. Lord give me the strength to do just that. Thank You so much Lord. Help me not to become like amon who never learned. Open my eyes, my heart and my mind so I can do and choose the right choices. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
