TITLE: Esther’s Request to the King

Scripture:  Esther 5:1 - 14

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After a 3-day fast, Esther was ready to meet the King.  With uncertainty of the outcome, Esther stood in the inner courts with nothing but her faith and trust to God.  When the King saw her, he was pleased and held out her scepter.  Before I proceed, it is important to note that it is not customary for a Queen to visit the King without being summoned but in this case, the King was happy with this approach made by Queen Esther.  We can learn a thing from this, in many conservative culture, the woman always waits for the man to make the first move but in a marraige, it is a pleasing surprise for the wife to make the first move at times.  I’m talking about intimacy - a surprise lunch date with your husband in the office or a note to let him think that you are thinking of him or a beautiful homemade surprise dinner date for your husband will be something that every husband will be happy to experience after a hard day or week.  So don’t wait for the husband to always initiate the first move, wives, do it yourself too!  Note that I recommend this strictly for husbands and wives.  Also, I believe that Esther made sure to be beautiful and attractive when she came to meet the King and so it was a great and nice surprise for the King indeed.

Moving on, the King’s response was asking Esther what she wants and even promised to give her even half of the Kingdom.  Men, most of the time, when pleased reciprocates it and more often, their first reply is to give something that is measured by wealth (money, house, car, etc.) to show their love and appreciation but don’t get it wrong, men are providers by nature and so they reciprocate in ways they know how to.  

Esther on the other hand, showed great humility and uncomfortable in asking, possibly, Esther was not the type to ask because she grew up an orphan and Mordecai must have taught her to be contented of what she has.  So instead of asking point blank or accusing Haman the moment she saw the King, Esther with her gentleness, continued to please the King by offering him a banquet together with his right-hand man, Haman.  Now wives or women, here’s another lesson we can learn from Esther, it is good to stop talking and do more good instead.  Esther could have told the King immediately about Haman’s plans, she could have stormed in the palace and cried and told the King of Haman’s horribly plan, she could have accused Haman without proof knowing that the King was pleased with her but she didn’t.  She remained poised and gentle and wise in God.  She offered a meal for the King and Haman and the King agreed to it.

At the dinner table, the King asked Esther for her request but again Esther said to come back for another banquet tomorrow with Haman and she will tell him her request.  Again, Esther chose to keep quiet and feed and serve the King and her enemy.  Maybe Esther was hoping for Haman to discuss the matter about her people to the King and then she can inject her request, or maybe she needed proof first and was hoping to get it during the dinner conversion - whatever Ether’s plan then, we don’t know.  But one thing is sure, Esther did not accuse without proof, she served and fed her enemy, she did good to both her husband and the man who sought to murder her people.  Now isn’t this paying evil with good?  Amazing!  In all these, Esther remained gentle, kind, good and meek.  Now that’s something we can all learn from.

Haman on the other hand saw Mordecai as he was going home and the sight of him made him so mad.  Now, don’t you think that’s a classic example of defeat?  I mean, the mere image of a person have such grave impact in you, which means, you are already losing even if the other person you’re mad at is not doing anything against you.  You feel attacked by his/her image even when he/she is not doing anything at all.  For me, that’s a sign of losing the fight.  So Haman felt it and went home to his wife and told her and his friends about all the things he accomplished and gained (pride) and the only thorn in his life is Mordecai and so the devil took the bait and offered Haman the execution of Mordecai to come to play.  When we are full of pride and so confident with ourselves, we feel invisible and we think that we can do just about anything, men then start doing evil!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, amazing God and majestic King!  I am so amazed of Your great hand and love for Your people.  Lord as i read the book of Esther, I am inclined to believe with all my heart that she was no Amazing Queen, she was an ordinary woman with an Amazing God!  Hallelujah!  Lord You have done such great things in the life of Esther, specifically on her behalf.  I am perplexed and in awe of such great work in the life of Esther.  Truly, she is the focus because her life only shows nothing but her weakness and all Your glory!  Oh Lord, I want to be like Esther, who did nothing at all, and just allowed You to do everythign in her.  May I always remember the gentleness, meekness, and warm heart of Esther and apply it in my own.  Thank You Jesus.  In Your Name I pray, Amen!
