TITLE: Job Speaks

Scripture:  Job 3:1 - 26

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 3 is the first instance when Job felt his sorrows deeply.  But before we dwell and look into his words, it is important that we note that before Job felt the gravity of his sorrows, his friends came and grieved with him for 7 days and 7 nights.  Also, please note that his 3 friends (Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar) had the greatest intention when they started their journey to Job’s home.  Verse 11 said that they met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and “comfort” him.  Note that they set out to Job’s home with 2 goals: 1) sympathize and 2) comfort.  Now as we read thru the end of chapter 2, we found out that they only accomplished one of their goals, which is the first one, sympathizing with him.  When they saw Job, it distracted them of their goals and felt tremendous pity on him that they wept aloud and said nothing to him because of how great his suffering was.  And we know what happened next, after Job saw his 3 friends, he felt the need to speak up and curse the day he was born!  Now look at what pity can do.  Job was standing strong with God even when his wife was already against his faith yet when Job saw his 3 friends feeling pity on him, that literally broke Job’s spirit.  I did some research and checked the difference between pity and compassion.  They actually have similar meanings but different connotations.  The big difference is that Compassion may be to feel the sufferings of another but it also comes with the drive to help the person in suffering.  But pity on the other hand is plain sympathy.  So there’s the difference!  And looking at the reaction of the 3 friends, we can conclude that they felt pity instead of compassion for they said nothing at all to Job.  Their mission was driven by compassion but when they saw him, it reduced to pity.  So let’s be careful of “pity” because it is a very distructive emotion that only leads to death and hopelessness.  Pity results to depression, suicide, etc; all negative results!  So instead of feeling pity, let’s feel compassion and give the other person hope.  Job was suffering already and though he has not seen a solution to his current situation yet, he was hopeful that’s why even if his wife was trying to turn him against his faith, he remained faithful to God.  But when he saw his 3 friends (these 3 friends may be the group he discussed things about God, possibly the same people he was with during a bible study or prayer meeting), these 3 friends saw him and grieved, which showed no hope for him too.  So now Job felt even more helpless and hopeless with his situation because of them.  So where’s the comfort in that? And that’s why Job started cursing the day he was born.

The words of Job in chapter 3 spoke of hopelessness, like a man who found no hope and just wanted to die and get his sufferings over with.  Sounds familiar?  Well most people who feel pity of themselves, feel and see no hope for them; that’s why death is normally the result (could be physical - suicide, or spiritual - depression).  Pity kills the spirit first and once succeeded, the body follows because a man has to go thru depression first before he commits to killing himself (suicide).  So pity attacks the person’s spirit first and once that is accomplished, the body is the next to follow death.  Job said in verse 24 - 26 said that “sighing” is his daily food and his “groans” like water.  What he feared has come upon him, what he dreaded the most.  No peace, no quietness, no rest...only turmoil!  Wow!  What a sorrowful emotions!  Each word speaks of nothing but death or lifelessness - this is the result of pity...DEATH!  Always remember that!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You so much for Your amazing love and for delivering me from the bondage of pity and depression.  Lord this revelation have shown me the greatness of Your power and the value of my life to You.  Lord thank You very much for Your love.  I can say it over and over again but the truth is, it feels not enough to just say it.  Lord, I am so amazed of what You did for me and the thought of the devil inflicting me with pity at a very young age speaks of the great length he would do to destroy those that You love the most.  It is only right that my life is returned to You because You are the only reason why I live and breathe today.  So Lord, make this life Yours completely and take the driver seat so I may follow Your every word and instruction.  Help me Lord to listen and hear Your word to me that I may obey and follow it.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
