TITLE: Eliphaz
Scripture: Job 4:1 - 21
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Eliphaz, the first of the three friends, spoke to Job. Reading this chapter made me realize that we have friends like Eliphaz, and not only that, sometimes, we are like Eliphaz to our friends. Let’s look at in details what he said to Job. He started with words of good deeds of Job. Job ended his words with cursing the day of his birth and so Eliphaz tried to comfort him by reminding him of the things he did good and the people who he supported when they stumbled (vs1 - 6). Then Eliphaz proceeded with telling Job about God being just! That evil will lose in the end and all bad or evil things will soon be judged and get what they deserved. He focus on the punishments of the wicked (vs 7-11). Then Eliphaz continued with a story and pointing out that no man is more righteous than God Himself, at this point, Eliphaz is already convincing Job that he must have sinned that’s why he is perishing. (vs 12 - 21). It didn’t stop here though. The next chapter (chapter 4), we will see that Eliphaz has become aggressive to even assume that God is correcting Job for his mistake. But that will be discussed tomorrow.
Now think about this and put yourself in Job shoes. You did nothing wrong, you did everything faithfully and right then the worst came into your life and now you have your friends with you who came to sympathize and comfort you, to make your feeling better but instead your friend comes to you and tell you that the wicked will be punished and convinced you that no one is more righteouse than God and since the wicked are punished and you are in this situation, you must be wicked or you must have sinned to be punished like this. Is that comforting at all? After you voice out your concern about being innocent and doing everything right so you curse the day you were born and thought that it would have been better if you were not born on earth, you hear these words from your friend, who you consider one of your closest, like a brother and part of the family, accusing you of doing something wrong. Wouldn’t that hurt even more? Here you are already feeling hurt and hopeless and confuse. You don’t the reason for the things that happened to you but you know you didnt do anything wrong - that you are sure of. Then here comes your brother telling you that you must have done wrong to deserve all this - which is a totally contradicting thought to what you believe to be true. Will you be comforted? I know I won’t be.
Let’s face it, one point in our lives, we became like Job here who heard these words from our very own Eliphaz in life but this truth is as true as the fact that one point in out lives, we have become Eliphaz to someone else too. We became their judge instead of their comforter. We became more of an accuser than a friend. So the next time we go to our friends, make sure we remain their friends despite of what happened or what they are experiencing.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, great and awesome God! I am grateful for this wonderful eye-opening facts that You are revealing to me in a daily basis. Today, I choose to be a friend to my sister and not a teacher or a judge or anyone else. Lord help me to be a friend. It is hard for me to do so because I can be overthinking a lot of things some times and would rather correct than comfort someone. Lord give me the heart to be a friend like You. I don’t want to be an Eliphaz to anyone Lord. Guide me not to become one. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
