TITLE: Eliphaz
Scripture: Job 5:1 - 27
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ This chapter continued Eliphaz words for Job. Now chapter 4 showed us that Eliphaz started his words by replying to Job that his life also did good to others but then he moved on by telling Job that all wicked or evil are punished or will suffer in the end. Then he pointed out that there’s no more righteous than God so if He sent sufferings to Job then JOb must have done something wrong. And all ill-manner whether it was a negative character, action or thoughts from Job, it will be dealt with. So Eliphaz was explaining to Job that he must have done something wrong to get all these sufferings. Then Eliphaz continued to give his solution, which is to plead before God for God does miracles and He can do all things. Eliphaz continued by telling JOb that he should feel blessed for God is correcting him. So he encouraged Job to plead for mercy. And he ended his words with the fact that what he said has been proven and that Job should apply what he said.
Looking at it, Eliphaz’s advise was not bad at all...it was actually great...for someone who actually sinned. In short, he was just telling Job that he must have done somethign wrong for this to happen and so ask for forgiveness to God and seek His mercy. Isn’t it a good advice? It is especially for those who have sinned and wronged the Lord. But note that Job was careful with his choices daily and according to the Bible, he was burning or sacrificing burnt offerings on a daily basis to ensure that he cleansed his family (including himself) from any sins whether they did or did not commit any mistakes. So this is Job’s character. He is very detailed and orderly. He is close to a perfectionist so he knew that he did not do anything wrong to deserve what he is experiencing rigth now. And though Eliphaz’s advice was sound, he knew that it is not right for him for he did not do anything wrong! Job knew that the solution was not right for him for it was not the solution for his problem. If you’re in Job’s situation, would you take this solution even though you know that it is not the right answer to your problem?
Let us also look at Eliphaz’s advice. Eliphaz, I believe, is a leader and knows the law in and out. His advice was good and in accordance to the law but the problem with his advice is, it is not applicable to Job’s case. So Eliphaz’s problem was that he was quick to jump into conclusions or assumptions without really understanding or getting all the facts of the situation. He failed to listen and know the real problem but just offered JOb the usual solution to similar cases he had or experienced before. As a friend, we ought to understand and see the real problem before giving irrelevant advices to our friends. Our words can destroy or give hope to those who trust us so be careful to give advice to them. It is important that we listen and understand and seek God’s guidance in giving solutions or answers to another’s problems.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me what kind of a friend Eliphaz was. He was a good person and had good intentions but his process in helping Job was not right. He was quick to jump into conclusions without understanding the real issue. He was giving advice based on his own experience and situation and not Job’s situation. Lord help me to be a good friend to others. Help me to listen and understand and give me Your guidance to be able to give sound and appropriate advice to others. Give me wisdom Lord that I may utter the right words but more than that, give me patience to listen and hear the real issue and my friend’s heart or condition before jumping into any conclusions or assumptions. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
