TITLE: Esther Made Queen

Scripture:  Esther 2:1 - 23

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After the humiliation that King Xerxes experienced because Queen Vashti refused to come when he called for her, King Xerxes sought for advise from his wise men and the good thing about King Xerxes is that he didn’t make any decisions based on his emotions.  Verse 1 showed us that only when King Xerxes’ fury subsided did he remember the wrong that Queen Vashti made and took action of it.  So we ought to learn from this King, we ought not to allow our anger control us but allow it to subside and think about the whole situation and came up with a solution.  

Chapter two is the 1st instance that Esther was introduced.  She was introduced as an orphan who lived with her cousin, Mordecai, who became her parent.  Mordecai and Esther’s bond was highlighted as a father and daughter relationship.  So Esther look up to Mordecai and Mordecai took care of her like his own daughter.  Mordecai raised Esther as a fine woman with humility and obedience to authority.  From verse 8, we see that Esther was given to the care of Hegai and Esther found favor from him.  Hegai was the King’s eunuch and was incharge of the women of all provinces.  Esther’s humility and obedience gave her favor from Hegai which worked for her advantage in this situation.  There were many women in all the provinces and it was so hard to stand out but Esther’s humility and obedience, in short, her inner beauty caught the attention of Hegai.  This clearly shows us that our inner beauty shines the most so we ought to build and nurture that along with our outer beauty.  Hegai immediately provided Esther with her beauty treatments and special food with 7 female attendants and moved her into the best place in the harem.  Now, see what humility and obedience can bring you to?  Esther was moved away from among the number of women to the best place in the Harem.  She was set apart because of her humility and obedience.

There was process or a journey that the women had to go thru before they can meet the king - a 12 months of beauty treatments.  Esther went thru this process but when it was her time to meet the king, she asked for nothing else than what Hegai advised or suggested.  Again, this showed Esther’s wisdom.  The King set Hegai as the person in charge for he knows the King’s preference.  And Esther trusted Hegai’s advise more than anyone else.  So Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her and the king was attracted to her and made her Queen. 

The last few verses of this chapter spoke of Mordecai, which clearly showed his importance in the life of Esther.  God placed Mordecai in an area where he was able to overhear two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who were conspiring against the king and wanted to assasinate the king.  Mordecai, with this information, went to esther and told her about this who in turn reported to the king and so the two officers were caught and Mordecai and Esther gained more favor in the eys of the king.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for a lovely story.  Thank You for the life of Esther who You used to teach me that a woman’s inner beauty is powerful and can bring us or promote us in the eyes of the people authority.  However just like Esther, she was beautiful inside and out so it is important to take care of ourselves both in and out too.  Lord help me to be beautiful inside and out because I don’t have full control of myself at times and I need You to take hold of my whole self.  Help me to take heed of advises of people in authority and be humble and obedient to them even if it seems unlikely for them to give me their advise for they do not look like experts in the area I need advise on.  Give me humility and strength to fight against pride and rebellion but set my heart to be humble and focus on You that I may obey those people in authority that You have placed in my life.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
