TITLE: Nehemiah’s Final Reforms

Scripture:  Nehemiah 12:1 - 31

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Nehemiah finished his mission in Jerusalem and so he went back to the king as he promised however while he was gone, Eliashib, the priest incharge of the storerooms of the house of God, provided a room to Tobiah.  The storeroom which was specifically set for the grain offerings, incenses and other offerings for the Lord was made a room for Tobiah.  Clearly this was a violation of the people’s promise to never neglect the temple.  These storerooms were set to house the offerings for God but Eliashib, in the absence of Nehemiah, decided to remove the offerings and made the storeroom a room to house Tobiah, who has no part in the temple.  I am unsure as to what’s Eliashib’s reasons for doing so, but the Bible tells us that Eliashib and Tobiah were closed.  So Eliashib felt love and concern for Tobiah, possibly, or it could be that Eliashib wants to gain favor from Tobiah that’s why he did what he did.  Whatever reason Eliashib had, the truth remained that he prioritize Tobiah before his duties as the priest of the temple.  He was supposed to take care of the temple instead he neglect the temple by removing one of the storeroom for the Lord’s offering and making it a room for Tobiah.  When nehemiah heard this, he was greatly displeased and so he threw all of Tobiah’s belongings, purified the room again and used it as what it is supposed to be. Now i want to dig deeper in this scenario, if we looked deeper, most people will be able to relate to Eliashib because he placed man’s first from grains, wine, etc.  So the storeroom is housing things (wine,food, etc) only but here we have Tobiah (who possibly did not have any place to stay)...so Eliashib, possibly had a heart for the man so he decided to do what he did.  But note that his action violated their promise for he was not removing things out of the storeroom to make it avaialbel for Tobiah - Eliashib was removing offerings for the Lord (these are sacred and purified for God).  So he was literally defiling the storeroom of God when he did this.  Eliashib may have a good intention and heart but his actions reflected his priorities over God and man. 

From verse 10 also showed that the Levites who were responsible for the service in the temple went back to their own fields possibly because their portions were not given to them.  So here we know that when men are not well compensated, their work will also be affected.  During Sabbath, some people of Judah come to the temple to sell and earn - again neglecting to keep the Sabbath holy.  And some of the people married foreigners to a point that their children know the language of the foreigners than their own language.  If we looked into these sins, we can see that people tend to prioritize other things: 1) other people (Tobiah), 2) accomplishments/rewards (people stopped working because their portions were not given), 3) money (people tries to earn even during the Sabbath), 4) Other culture and tradition - marrying foreigners and focus more on the culture and tradition of the foreigners.  The sins mentioned in this chapter is about man’s priority over many things before God.  So these levties defiled their covenant with God.  

But the major lesson is that all these happened in the absence of Nehemiah!  It was when Nehemiah left Jerusalem that the people’s priorities began to change.  So clearly, we all need a shepherd and when we lose the sight of our Shepherd, we are automatically get lost of our way.  So we ought to hold on to our Shepherd, God!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, what a wonderful and valuable lesson today!  Thank You for making me realize that what is important is to never lose sight of You, Jesus!  For You direct us and lead us and straighten our ways.  Lord, never allow me to lose sight of You.  I know that I can be very forgetful many times and when I lose sight of You that’s when I get to do things incorrectly even if my heart and intentions seemed to be good, still I get lose sight of what is important because I lose sight of You.  So never allow me to lose sight of You Lord!  I want to always have You by my side every day!  Walk with me Jesus every step of every day.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
