TITLE: Haman’s Plot to Destroy the Jews

Scripture:  Esther 3:1 - 15

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 3 started with the act of the King of promoting Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, giving him a seat of honor higher than any nobles.  So Haman was selected/chosen by the King himself and set apart from the rest of the nobles.  There was no mention as to why Haman was promoted so we can just speculate at this time.  It is possible that he found favor to the King for he was faithful and hardworking; possible that the King saw a potential in this man and knew that he was a man with great skills, stature and can be trusted to be the King’s right hand.  The king must have thought that Haman showed leadership skills and he would be a great proxy to the King.  So the King decided to promote him.  The King may wanted to rest for some time from his usual role so he delegated his tasks to someone he trusted and promoted to be his right hand.  Haman may have showed such great sense of duty and responsibility and he may have been someone that was closed to the King and so the King trusted him enough to put him in charge of everything.  So here we see that God gives us favor in the eyes of men with our inner beauty, honesty, humility and obedience.  The same favor can be acquired by men thru deception.  Haman may be doing good but his heart was definitely not right yet he managed to be favorable in the eyes of the King too.  So here we see that there’s 2 kinds of favor: one that is given by God and moves supernaturally, and the 2nd is man’s own deception and moves naturally.  But know that the favor Esther received was from God and she didn’t have to pretend or change to receive that favor for God moved and worked His way for her.  On the other hand, Haman had to pretend or possibly do things he didn’t want to please the king and gain his favor but in the end his true nature was revealed.  So it is true, you can gain favor from men but you have the choice to allow God to do it for you, or you can do it on your own and end up getting into a mess that you have no way out later on.  So your choice!

Haman enjoyed the fame and the authority that the King gave him but then when opposition came, he got furious and led him to do or make wrong decisions that led him to his downfall.  Esther as Queen also had her oppositions or troubles - when she came to the King to request to spare her people, it was a risk that she had to go through that could also result to her death, yet instead of panicking, she prayed and fasted and asked others to do the same for her too.  So we can see that the actions of these two individuals are trully the opposite.  Haman was favored by the King thru his own actions yet when trouble came, it made him furious and act on things without thinking it through.  Esther was also favored by the King thru God’s grace and when trouble came, she was on her knees to God.  And we know the result for both of them.
Now Mordeccai on the other hand, I believe, had a discerning spirit.  He knew Haman and he knew that he is someone not to be trusted.  When people are busy bowing before him, Mordeccai refused to bow down, not only because it was wrong according to their beliefs, but I believe because Mordeccai saw the real Haman.  And Haman knew this too that’s why Mordeccai’s action affected him so much and caused him to do stupid things that cause his downfall.

The King, unaware and blinded of the truth about Haman, gave his ring as an approval for whatever Haman decides to do.  Sometimes, we are blind to see the real persona of a person because we already have this image of him in our mind that we believe to be who he is and so it is hard for us to see that he is capable of doing something that is out of character of the image we have of him in our mind.  We ought to be careful and make sure to ask God to show us the reality of the person we deal and have relationship with every day.  So Haman did what he wants in the King’s name and this caused the people to be confused for now Haman is not just showing his true identity but also using the King’s Name for all his evil ways.  This is interesting and made me think that men is the reason why people are confused about God.  Just like Haman, some men uses the Name of God for their evil ways and so the people questions and get confused of who God really is.  That’s why it is very important that each one develops a relationship with God personally and read His word and pray to Him daily.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, great almighty God!  I am amazed of the great things you are teaching me today.  You are revealing new things to me in the story of Esther and I am in awe of Your wisdom.  Thank You Lord.  Lord, help me to always seek the truth about You by reading Your word and being in constant communication with You.  Lord help me to never get confuse of who You are for I hold on to Your word that speaks nothing but the truth.  Lord give me an open eyes and a sensitive one to see the truth about the people I deal with.  Give me a discerning spirit like Mordeccai who was able to discern the truth of Haman’s identity.  Help me to rest on Your Grace and favor and not achieve it on my own.  Help me to be fully dependent on You Jesus.  Lord help me to never do anything that will ruin or make others confuse of who You really are!  Do not allow my actions to tarnish Your good Name and Image.  Help me Lord to always consider You in all my actions that I may not cause others to be confused of who You really are.  Walk with me Lord and guide me in every step of my way on this earth.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
