TITLE: Queen Vashti Deposed
Scripture: Esther 1:1 - 22
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ King Xerxes according to this chapter is a proud man. He has great wealth, great accomplishments and wonderful possessions. He was a king who loved to flaunt his riches, wealth and fame to others. The king who ruled 127 provinces, we could say that he was the greatest king in his time and so he threw a feast/celebration showcasing all his achievements and everything he owned. For 6 months, he opened his kingdom and displayed everything he has for all the people to see. One day, the king ordered his eunuchs to bring his Queen to be presented to the people for she was beautiful and was lovely to look at. Queen Vashti refused and that made the king angry leading to the dethroned of the Queen. This chapter is just a short story but it speaks a lot of valuable lesson. First, women are not objects that are conquered but in reality men do consider the women of their lives as one of their greatest conquest in life. So it is important to understand that women portrays man’s achievement and women should not feel bad about this but instead feel valued for we are man’s treasures. And as the women in the lives of our men, we ought to present ourselves that will bring pride to our men. If we look at proverbs 31 (The wife of noble character), we can see there, that women are to present themselves more valuable than rubies and to bring good, not harm, to the lives of their men. So we ought not to be offended whe our husband displays us to his friends and family, like a trophy wife, because we do represent his treasures, his achievements, etc. I don’t know the reason why Queen Vashti refused the King’s command but clearly her decision cause her her title and throne. She must have forgotten that her role as Queen is to bring good to her King and so her action led to her downfall. As wives, women must understand their purpose and role as the woman in the life of her husband.
Another thing i learned in this chapter is that alcohol is never an excuse! Many people today blamed everything in alcohol. When they made something horrible or a mistake, they blame it on alcohol, reasoning that they were under the influence. But King Xerxes was under the influence but it didn’t cause him to make abrupt and unreasonable decisions. In verse 10 says that King Xerxes was in high spirit from wine. He became furious and burned with anger when Queen Vashti refused his command, yet instead of making rush decisions or actions, verse13 shows that King Xerxes took control and asked for advice before making any decisions on Queen Vashti’s action. Now that’s how it’s done! We should never make decisions based on our emotions or when we are intoxicated but instead we ought to find advise, wise advise. King Xerxes was a king and he could have done anything he wish yet before he made a decision, he sought for advise first, even in his marraige. Many couples today, would rather solve their marraige on their own and there’s nothing wrong with that, but at times, there are things that we cannot see and understand unless it is pointed to us. King Xerxes was a king and his problem was his wife, we can argue that this was a personal issue, yet he consulted his advisers on how to handle this issue. Now we should never be ashamed or afraid to seek for advise.
Also note that when King Xerxes seek for the advise of his wise men, it was pointed out that the action of the Queen can influence other women. This reminds me that our actions, no matter who we did it to, reflects and can influence others. There are people who look up to us, whther it’s our employees, our children, our disciples, etc, the fact remains that there are people who do look up to us and whether our actions are not towards them directly, it will still impact them! So we ought to be careful and cautious that we do not do anything that will be the cause for others to stumble down or sin.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, Thank You for a wonderful lesson today! I am amazed of the things You teach me in a daily basis. I know that I cannot do it alone and I do not have the strength nor the power to apply them in my life consistently and so I asked for Your guidance daily that I may always walk in Your word and will. Lord help me to remember always that I am a treasure to my husband. My purpose is to bring good and not harm to him. Remind me to never blame anything else for the mistakes I make and to take accountability for my actions. Lord give me wisdom like King Xerxes who did not make any abrupt decisions because he was mad and not to be ashamed or afraid to ask for advise. Help me Lord to always remember that everything I do influence others so I ought to always walk in Your Will and Word so I may be a good example to them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
