TITLE: The Call of Abraham

Scripture:  Genesis 12

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

1) God wants to be involved in our calling (verse 1)

God said to Abraham, Go to the land I will show you.  It is clear that Abraham had to walk in faith and follow the Lord’s command without really understanding or knowing where this land is.

There are 2 important part of the calling:

A) Command

B) Promise

And there are two persons involve in this process: God and Us

The start of our journey begins in God’s calling and it ends with us receiving His promise but in between lies the journey to the fulfillment of the calling.  In that journey, God gives or works in ways that gives us direction, joy and hope in the fulfillment of our calling.  But more importantly, God did not told Abraham to go to Shechem directly, in fact, God just said to him, go to the land that I will show you  So there’s the “showing” part.  No one can show another without his or her presence.  It is important that in this context, God wants to be continually involve with us as we obey and follow the calling He has set in our lives

2) God gives us reason to be happy to continue in this journey (verse7)

Abraham was travelling, following the directions of the Lord.  We know that the land he went thru are mostly deserts and maybe when he saw Shechem, Abraham was relieved to find a resting place.  He was tired of the journey and we didn’t know how long he was travelling at that time.  But the moment he stepped into Shechem, the Lord appeared to Him and told him that the land is the land HE will give to his descendants.  I believe this revived Abraham and renewed his strength to continue on.  There was so much joy in Abraham’s heart upon hearing this from God that the result of this was him building an altar for the Lord.

God wants us to be happy in this journey.  He comes in and interject in our journey to give us the joy we need in pursuing the calling HE has given us.  What an amazing God we have!

3) God wants to save us and give us a life worry-free (verses 10-20)

The story of Abraham in Egypt was something that amazes me.  Here we see Abraham told Sarah to lie because he feared for his life.  Yet when things got worse, the Lord intervened and got angry to Pharaoh.  When I think about this story, I cant help but ask why God got angry to Pharaoh when in fact, it was Abraham who decided to lie.  Here I see, God’s grace at work.  Because Abraham received God’s protection and deliverance underservingly - Truly, Grace at work.  It’s as if God wants him to go on and continue living worrying with nothing no matter what because he was pursuing the calling that God has given him.

This reminds me of Job 39, when God responded to Job and HE told him of his limitation as a man.  The whole chapter of 39 of Job, God used wild creatures like the ostrich, wild donkey, horse, hawk, etc to portray his point.  Telling Job that these animals go their own way without a care of this world yet they are still taken care of.  This speaks to me of God wanting us to live a life worry-free!  The same way like Abraham.  He was pursuing his calling yet as he journey towards the fulfillment of it, along the way, he made mistakes but God saved him anyway.  God delivered and protected him despite of his errors.  Now that’s Grace!  Amazing Grace indeed!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for a wonderful message. Help me to live it in my life and to understand that my calling from You is what my destined task in life.  Help me to surrender fully to Your commands and give me wisdom to see and understand every direction You have given before me.  Help me Lord to see Your GRace at work in my life at all times so I may recognize that it is You that I live on.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
