TITLE: For the Director of Music, To The Tune of “The Death of the Son.” A Psalm of David

Scripture:  Psalm 9:1 - 20

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ This chapter was written by David in a reflection of the death of his son, the son who was born out of his sin with Bathsheeba.  After that tragedy, when everyone expected David to mourn just like he did when his son was still dying, David suddenly turned a new leaf that was surprising for everyone that they thought he was being crazy but he responded to them that when he was son was still dying, he had the chance to mourn and plead before God, so he fasted and prayed for the life of his son.  Now that his son is dead, he rest upon the Lord's decision and moved on.  So this is the chapter he wrote after that tragedy.

Amazingly, David started by giving thanks to the Lord after a tragedy with all his heart!  And chose to speak of God's wonderful deeds instead of the loss and hurts he felt for the loss of his son.  He chose to be glad and rejoice in God and sing praises to His Name instead of mourning and feeling sad.  Then David continued in verses 3 - 6 in speaking God's wonderful acts towards him and against his enemies.  Believing that God is a righteous judge and upholding his right and cause.  Now, this comes from a man who lost his son because of his own mistake.  David spoke of a just God after the lost of his innocent son - to some this will come as an irony and will even think that God was being unfair but not to David.  He knew the Lord and He knew that His actions are just and He is righteous.

David then proceed in proclaiming God's glory and reign forever.  Believing with all his heart that God's throne for judgment has been established.  He spoke of God as the refuge of the oppressed and a stronghold in times of trouble and that God will never forsake those who seek Him.  Upon reading this, I can only come up with one thing.  David, no matter what happens to him, always believe that God is on his side and everything bad happened to him, is never God's doing!  It was always the doing of his enemies and even if God has the power to intervene and choose not to, David never blamed God, instead he moved on and hold firmly in his believe that God is always in his side.  What a wonderful feeling that will be to know that God is on our side.  No matter what happens, whether we are suffering or we are experiencing a tragedy in our lives, God is on our side!

That's why in Verses 11 -12, David can sing praises to the Lord and proclaiming to the nations what God has done for him because he knew that God has always been and will always be in his side!  Hallelujah!  God is on our side always no matter what!  Amen!

Verses 13 - 14, David spoke of how his enemies persecute him after the lost of his son.  Now, the death of his son was not caused by his enemy (like another king or another man who murdered his son).  In fact, his son died a natural death yet, he spoke of his enemy persecuting him!  This is because, David knows that his enemy is not just other humans who wants to dethroned him but he knows that there's a spiritual battle too and the devil is at hand in all his sufferings.  And so he called upon the Lord for help because his enemy is beyond his power.

In verses 15 - 18, David again proclaimed God as the Lord who is known by his acts of justice and how the wicked will be judged by Him because God never forgets those who are in need so those who are afflicted with sufferings will never lose hope because God never forgets the needy.  Hallelujah!

And in verses 19 - 20, David called upon God to rise up and vindicate him and to intervene and jump into the battle he is facing, both spiritual and physical.  May we recognize the importance of asking God to intervene in our struggles because He alone can save and deliver us from all battles we face, whether the natural or the supernatural.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, what an amazing message today.  At times, I marvel at the words You show me and how You reveal these messages to me.  I am deeply moved and honored to have receive these wonderful words from You.  Thank You Jesus for entrusting me with Your word.  Lord, may I apply and live these words in my life that I too will understand the meaning of true dependency with You.  As You build my faith, my character, and my wealth and authority in You on earth, as I obey Your calling in my life, help me Lord to develop true dependency in You like David did and to understand fully that You are always in my side no matter what.  In Jesus' Name, Amen!
