TITLE: For the Director of Music, A Psalm Of David 

Scripture:  Psalm 20:1 - 9

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Psalm 20 is David's prayers for us all... a prayer not for himself but for those who are in distress like he was before God came and saved him.  David has a pure heart and his prayer showed reverence and humility at all times.  David did not assume what God wants for His people.  In fact, all his prayers from verses 1 - 5, is not about confirmation but a supplication.. it all started with "May the Lord..." or "May He..."  David prayed for positive things for us and even hope that God will grant all our requests.  So David did not pray or say anything as if he knows what God wants or plans was.  He prayed hoping for the best result.  But he did speak in assurance of certain things found in verses 6 - 9.  That the Lord gives victory to His anointed, answers him with victorious power of His right hand, those who trust on other things except the Lord will be brought to their knees and fall but we who trust in Him will rise up and stand firm.  So though, David did not make any assumptions on the specific answers to his prayers, he knew that God will answer him.  Let us have the same humility and assurance like David!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus thank You for a wonderful message.  Thank You for teaching me how to pray.  Lord help me to always pray in reverence and humility, never assuming that I know better than You.  Lord Help me to always pray in supplication and not assumption.  I know that You are a God who protects and delivers and provides but help me Lord to see the difference between assumption and reverence to You.  I know You understand what i'm trying to say Lord as I have difficulty explaining it further.  But Lord search my heart always and remind me to be humble in my prayer and always revere You.  In Jesus' Name, Amen!

TITLE: For the Director of Music, A Psalm Of David 

Scripture:  Psalm 19:1 - 14

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ This is such an intimate words of worship and praise from David.  The whole focus of the Psalm is the Lord as always.  David started by declaring God's amazing glory and how nature in its purest form shout praises to the King!  Though Nature have no words to express their adoration to God, its very own existence do just that - it praises the Lord.  Their voices cries out to God to the ends of the world declaring His amazing glory and are heard.  And we can see that David also noted that God Himself waits for their praises.  Look at verse 4, David said God has pitched a tent for the Sun - sounds like God is waiting for its return. In verse 5, David said that God is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.  God takes pleasure in our praise and when nature comes out to declare His glory, God is pumped up and enjoys it very much.  Like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, we all know that a groom or bride that comes out of his/her bed, is expected to be full of energy and happiness.  Or like a champion rejoicing to run his course, like any athlete who is excited for the race and with full energy and expectations of winning!  Now that's what God when Nature declare praises to Him.  How much more when we do the same?  And remember the joy of the Lord is our strength!  So to draw our strength, let us Praise the Lord with all our heart, mind, body, and soul!  Amen!

David stated a few logical reasons for praising God.  In verses 7 - 9, he said that the Lord's law is perfect - in fact it is refreshing to the soul! His statutes are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  wow!  Have you ever thought of the law as refreshment for your soul?  Well it is!  If you know you did what is right when judgment comes, you will definitely be refreshed and relieved :) David even said that the precepts of the Lord are right and gives joy to the heart.  Now that's something, isn't it?  I mean, David sees God's words as a joy in his heart.  Do we see it the same?  God's commands are radiant that it gives light to our eyes.  David clearly have a deeper understanding of God's words - seeing it as a basic need every day.  Refreshment for the soul, making wise the simple, giving joy to the heart, giving light to the eyes but most importantly what David wrote in verse 9, the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.  His decrees are firm and all of them are righteous.  So God's words not only refreshes our soul, making us wise, giving joy to our hearts, giving light to the eyes but our fear of God is pure and enduring forever!  We are taught today not to fear God but treat Him as a friend and while it is true, He is our friend, He is still the King of King and the Lord of Lords that needs to be feared and respected and adorn.  Many times, because we treat God as our friends, we tend to treat Him like our equal which should never be the case when you have the fear of God.  So let's always remember this.

David continued on talking about the Words of the Lord - how they are more precious than gold and sweeter than honey.  It is through God's words that we are warned and in keeping His words, we are rewarded greatly.  So we ought to treasure the word of God because it is life!  It is the most valuable treasures we have on earth and everywhere else.  Stay connected to Him and always hear His voice.

Note that in verse 12, David did not forget to remember his nature as human, so he sought for God's forgiveness and knowing his will and nature, he sought for God's help in avoiding sins...but note that David specifically said "willful sins" - sins that we willingly do.  He sought God's help against them and even said that "may these sins not rule over me".  David recognize his weakness and so he asked God for strength in this area because He knew only God can overcome and help him overcome them.  All this for the purpose that David becomes blameless, innocent of great transgression.  May we all seek to be righteous and blameless like David.  In the end, David's words and thoughts may seem pure to us yet he still sought for God's approval and that HE may find it pleasing.  So in the end, David's goal is to please the Lord - not men, not himself, not anyone else but only One - and that is his Lord, His Rock and His Redeemer.  The question now is, do we seek the same goal?

Prayer:

Lord this psalm of David is filled with great knowledge and wisdom.  I pray that I will be able to internalize this and understand fully the extend of the wisdom hidden in each word. Lord help me to recognize my own weakness and always seek for Your help, knowing that only You can overcome whatever weaknesses I have in me.  Lord I pray that I will have the desire to become blameless and righteous like David for the sole purpose of being with You!  I pray that my heart will always seek to please You Lord and my lips will utter nothing but praise and worship to Your Name.  Now, I know that if I need strength, all I need is to Praise You because You delight in our praises and worships...and Your joy becomes my strength.  It all connects now!  Thank You for reminding me the importance of Praising and worshipping You Jesus.  In Your Name I pray all these, Amen!

TITLE: For the Director of Music, Of David the servant of the Lord.  He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.  He said...

Scripture:  Psalm 18:1 - 50

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Psalm 18 was the first Psalm of David after God's victory in his life.  Note that this psalm has many words, a total of 50 verses, whereas the other psalms he wrote when he was still crying out to God and pleading for the Lord to save him were consisting of few verses, the most to be at 20 to 22 verses.  But after the Lord delivered him, David's gratefulness was at high and he was just unable to stop himself from giving Praise to God!  We ought to remember this and seek to Praise and give thanks to God more than we seek to ask from Him.  We pray to ask for God's help but when we are happy or victorious, let our thanksgiving prayer be even more than our requests.

David started this psalm with the main thought or center of his heart, his love for the Lord.  At the beginning, He declared his love for God who is his strength!  Then he proceed by describing who God was and is in his life - his rock, fortress, his deliverer, his refuge, shield, horn of his salvation and his stronghold.  Clearly, establishing God as a solid rock that we can all hold onto at all times.  David assuring and confirming the validity of God as his Rock and deliverer!  

Then from verse 6, David proclaimed his testimony - declaring what God has done!  Note that only verse 6 showed that David was in distress, then from verses 7 down to 15, David spoke of God's power and might!  Now this is what you call a testimony!  The focus is the Lord's power and might, not the heaviness of our burden before He saved us!  From verses 16 to 19, David spoke of who was God in times of his troubles.  

In verses 20 to 24, David also showed that God was just - showing us that God's action was according to the right choices we made daily.  The decisions we took to do what is right every day.  And in verses 25 - 29, David confirmed that God is faithful to His children and He saves the humble.  David also declared that it was God who kept his lamp burning, who turns his darkness into light!

From verses 30 - 36, David declared God's ways to be perfect and His words flawless!  David clearly believe with all his heart that there is no one like God and He is his source of strength, rest, security, and happiness!

In verses 37 - 45, David proclaimed what he did to his enemies, only because God was with him.  So in everything he did, he knew, it was only possible because of the Lord. 

And in verses 46 - 50, David ended his psalm in full praise to his Rock!  Exaltation to the One true God, his Savior!  And David declared that he will praise Him for everything He has done and sing praises of His Name because of His unfailing love to His anointed ones.  Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for another day, another lesson to learn.  Thank You because every day You teach me new things and sometimes remind me of the things I start to forget.  Today, another great lesson that I need to remember daily!  My words should speak more of Your greatness and not of my troubles!  David teaches me what it is to testify in this psalm!  The Focus is You and Your greatness, Your power and might, Your glory and strength!  The center of the testimony should be what You did!  You being right and just and faithful to us!  Not how miserable our lives were, or how heavy the burdens were carrying!  Not what we did and how we failed or how the world conspires against us....but the center of our testimony should be YOU Lord!  David wrote this Psalm and to some, they may think that his words are repetitive!  Well, the truth is, it is!  Because our testimonies must be a repetition of Your greatness and marvelous works in our lives and the realization that everything we did, the successes we achieve, were only possible because of You!  Lord help me to praise and worship You like David.  Teach me the habit of giving praise to You more than thinking of anything else or speaking of my problems, gossips, news, etc.  Let my words be filled with praise and adoration to You alone Jesus.  May I exalt You forever!  in Jesus' Name, Amen!

TITLE: A Prayer Of David

Scripture:  Psalm 17:1 - 15

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Psalm 17 is another prayer from David.  David spoke freely before God of his request because his prayer is just and he does not asked out of evil desires or intentions.  David sought for God's help, further than that, he pleaded and cried for His help but despite of his relationship with the Lord, his intimacy with the Father, he could asked for anything he wanted, but we see that David asked for what is just.  He sought the truth.  David showed us his character, a true role model for us all.  His integrity is intact despite of the attacks of his enemy and he was assured that his prayers will be answered for he seeks justice and what is right in the eyes of God. This teaches us to examine our prayers and truly look into the intentions of our hearts for the things we ask God of.  Can we truly say that our pleas and requests from him is with a pure heart?  Are they right before the Lord?  Can we truly say that our pleas are according to God's will?  Well, David can!  How?  Because his every steps was guided by the Lord.  There is no evil in his plans because it was directed and instructed by God Himself!  This is how it's going to be when we walk daily with God.  He will direct our paths each day :)

That's why, David knew that when he calls upon God, God will answer and listen to his prayer.  David knew that God will show him the wonders of His great love for him and will save him by His right hand.  David hold firms to the truth that the Lord will keep him as the apple of His eye and will hide him in the shadow of His wings from his enemies because all David's ways are of the Lord's.

Let us not be like the wicked people who close their hearts that are already callous and speaks with arrogance.  The enemy may have tracked us down and surrounded us, but the Lord will rise up, confront them and bring them down altogether!  God will save us by His hand from them.  We will be vindicated and will see God's face in the end and our hearts, whether our needs or wants, will be completely satisfied by seeing God's likeness.  Oh what a wonderful time will that be, to have a glimpse of Your face Lord.  How marvelous would that feeling be and how joyous to full satisfaction to witness You and be one with Your presence.  How I long for that time Lord :)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for such a wonderful and amazing teaching.  I am so grateful that I get to learn from one of the most successful Kings on earth, King David!  But above all, to learn from Your presence Lord is great feeling that I cannot explain in mere words!  Lord thank You because I am the apple of Your eye and You keep me to be that way since the beginning of my birth.  Lord help me to seek and pray for what is right.  At times, I don't know what to pray but Lord give me wisdom and guide me to the prayers I must ask of You.  Lord I want You to direct my path daily that I may confidently come and ask from You.  Give me the security and assurance of knowing that I am walking the path You have chosen for me.  Forgive me Lord for whatever I may have done to go astray from Your will and bring me back to the path that I must take.  In Jesus' Name, Amen!

TITLE: A Miktam Of David

Scripture:  Psalm 16:1 - 11

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ David, once again, emphasized God as His refuge.  Every time he is in trouble or in distress, his lips utter only one thing...God is his refuge.  Can we say the same?  Are we able to hold on to this truth and know that God is our refuge in our troubles?  David surely did so and whatever troubling circumstances he was in, he goes back calling upon the Lord who he took refuge from.  We ought to do the same and follow the examples of David.  Whether small or great, no matter the size of our problems, we should seek refuge from the only safe Refuge we can get it from, the Lord!

Also note that David even before the two greatest commandments were given by Jesus, already understand the value of loving God and man.  In verses 2 - 4, we can see that David pointed our to the Lord as the source of all good.  This is the reason that when we see nothing but the negative of all things, then it is safe to say that we do not see God around us anymore.  Because when we believe in God and God is the source of all good things, our eyes will continually seek and find the good around us.  David also spoke about the holy people whom he is delighted with.  The importance of fellowship with one another - with people with the same convictions and beliefs! These 2 are valuable even before the time of Jesus and these were already emphasized in the lives of the people closest to God.  This only proves that the Spirit working in the old testament is the same Spirit working in the new testament because they speak the same language.

David continued by declaring God as his portion and cup.  Note that in the early days, people are dependent on their inheritance, their portion of it and they are entitled to it - which relates to provision.  Yet, David already knew that his provision is the Lord's and even if he loses all his inheritance, God is still his portion and cup who will be the source of his provision of all his needs.  So he will praise the Lord who counsels him and instructs his heart.  God in this chapter was portrayed by David as a guide and teacher so David kept his eyes upon Him with the assurance that he will not be shaken for God is at his right hand.  We can have the same confidence and certainty as we walk with God every day of our lives.  Seeking for His guidance and instructions on a daily basis and understanding that we can only live through Him.

For the same reasons, because of God's guidance and instructions that keep us firm and unshakeable, our hearts are glad and our tongue will rejoice!  We will have rest in Him - with full security because the Lord does not abandon us!  He will not allow His faithful children to wither or lose.  God will show and reveal the path of life to us and will fill us the joy of His presence with eternal pleasures at His right hand.  Wow!  What an amazing life it would be to discover the path of my life with You each day and enjoying the joy of Your presence with certainty of eternal pleasures with us by Your side.  I choose You Lord!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, what an amazing revelation  - to know that there is no point of worry because You are the source of all good and my own inheritance.  Thank You because You open my eyes to the good around me so as long as You are with me, I will always see the good of everything because apart from You, there is no good thing.  Thank You because You are my inheritance and my portion.  I will not fear for my needs not be met because You will take care of them.  Thank You because You are my Guide and my Teacher, I accept Your guidance and instructions today.  Open my ears that I may hear clearly Lord.  Let me know Your ways that I may follow them.  Thank You because as I do so, my whole being won't be able to stop praising You and rejoicing for You will reveal my path and fill me with the joy of Your presence daily with the assurance of eternal pleasures with You.  Thank You Jesus.  I want and NEED all these!  In Jesus' Name, Amen!

TITLE: A Psalm Of David

Scripture:  Psalm 15:1 - 5

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Psalm 15 is a psalm of many lessons.  David enumerated some of the ways of the righteous, which we all should imitate.  Jesus is preparing a room for us but He prepares a place in our sacred home in the holy mountain with Him and we ought to be worthy of the place ready for us.  David pointed out some of the ways that we ought to consciously decide each day.  

1) walk blamelessly - doing what is right; choosing what is right and just daily and speaking the truth from our hearts. No lies, no pretentions, no complications.  Purely good, right, just and the truth - simple!

2) Speaks no wrong or slander to another - we ought to live not only blamelessly, being cautious of our own decisions for our selves every day but also to be consciously choosing to never speak ill or do anything bad to others.

3) Honors the Lord and those who fears Him  - we ought to support those who fear God and despise the vile person.  Despire means to regard as worthless or distasteful, or to look down on with contempt 

David does not encourage us to look down on someone but our reaction to wickedness or evil or vile should be this.  But not towards the man of God.  Many times, we tend to tolerate sin because we think that the man doing it deserves mercy and he does... but never to a point of tolerating or compromising or accepting him as the wicked that he is.  We are better than that.  God teaches us to never accept the worst of man because man is not evil or wicked and so we ought to despise it.  We ought to despise evil and help one another bring out the best of themselves and not just accept their sins.

4) Remained committed to our words and promises - God is a the God of truth and we ought to be the same when it comes to our word and promises

These are people who will dwell in the place God prepared for us and the best thing about people who chooses to walk blamelessly, speak no ill or evil towards others, honors God and those who fear Him, keep his words and commitment and remain true to his promises, we will never be shaken! Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for these lessons.  I know I need to be reminded of these every day.  Help me Lord to choose what is right daily that I may walk blamelessly, speaks no ill or evil towards others, honors You and those who fear You but despises evil, and keeps my promises and committed to my words. So in whatever circumstances I am in, i will not be shaken and I will be ready to dwell in the place You have prepared for me.  In Jesus' Name, Amen!

TITLE: For the Director of Music, of David

Scripture:  Psalm 14:1 - 7

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ David knew the heart of God but he also is a man of keen observations.  He is a king of wisdom and so he knew the heart of God but also he saw the ways of the wicked.  And in this chapter, he pointed out one major observation from a wicked man.  A wicked man is a fool and in his heart, he says, there is no God.  Now, I want to look into this deeper.  The fool does not shout or declare there is no God, in fact, it was only in his heart that he says that there is no God.  The wicked man believes that everyone is corrupt and man's nature is evil.  Clearly, this speaks of a negative person who only sees nothing but the bad things around him.  I also just realized that a fool, only sees the negative because he does not believe the existence of God.  Because if man believes, God is alive and He exists, there's no way that the same person who believes God exists would think of nothing but the negative of everything.  Because God is positive and He is good and when you believe in God, you believe in good.  So a man who says there's no God, whether he speaks of it silently or out loud, is a man who does not see the good in anything.

David tells us that the Lord looks down from heaven on all of us to see if there are any of us who seek Him and understands.  When we truly believe in the Lord, no matter what happens around us, we could always see the good in everything because God is good and God is everywhere so His goodness is all around us all the time.

One thing that we can really hold on is the truth that David spoke of in verse 5, that God is present in the company of the righteous.  He is with us no matter what happens around us.  He is our refuge every time.  And soon, He will restore His people.  So we ought to rejoice and be glad in the hope of His redemption for us all from the wicked.  Thank You Lord for my salvation!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for a short yet meaningful lesson today.  I am amazed to learn the truth that a man only sees the negative of things when he doesnt believe in God.  For no man can even believe You exists and does not see Your goodness around him.  So thank You Lord because every day, You open my eyes to see Your goodness at work.  Thank You because truly, You are magnificent and my sure refuge at all times.  Thank You because my redemption is near and You will come to save me in all troubles.  In Jesus' Name, Amen!
