TITLE: Cyrus Helps the Exiles to Return

Scripture:  Ezra 1:1 - 11

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ 2 Chronicles had a sad ending as the Israelites were exiled from their land.  But the book of Ezra started with hope and a new beginning for the Israelites, as King Cyrus of Persia was moved by God to free His people and build a temple at Jerusalem in Judah.  Amazing that God used a gentile to have a pure and noble desire, the same desire that was placed in the heart of David, which was to build God a temple in the land of His people.  This speaks greatly of king Cyrus’ personality, heart and character.  However in truth or the reality of the matter is, King Cyrus felt or did what he did because God moved his heart.  The focus of this story for me then is God moves the heart of men, whether you are a Jew or Gentile.  It is interesting to note that Josiah (the last king of Judah before there were exiled who followed God fell to his death because he did not listen to Necho the Egyptian Pharaoh of God’s message to Necho) and the book of Ezra started a new beginning by using again another Gentile to carry out God’s plan.  Cyrus was the King of Persia yet as you can see in this chapter, he was given a desire, a burden in his heart, to build a temple for the Lord in the land of Judah, which is a land that is not his own.  Truly, this was a work of the Lord.  That’s why it is very important to note that in Cyrus’ case, God moved his heart.  No matter what Cyrus’ character was whether he was good or bad, the key here is that God’s chose him and moved him to have this desire in his heart.  Again this shows the great love of God to Israel.  Despite of their evil ways, which led to their exile, in the end, God found a way or should I say, made a way to unite Israel and bring them back to the land He promised them.  What an awesome God!  Not only that, when God moved to unite His people again, He made sure that their needs were provided for the task He called them to do.  That’s why free offerings were given, silver and gold, with goods and livestocks and with valuable gifts were provided.  Amazing Lord truly is our God!  Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, amazing God and wonderful Saviour!  Truly there is none like You Lord.  I am greatly amazed of Your great love which You have shown to me again in the 1st chapter of the book of Ezra.  Indeed You are a great and awesome God!  I am so grateful that I have known You and I continue to know of You more and more each day as You reveal valuable lessons and messages in Your words daily.  Thank You Lord that You used a gentile, King Cyrus, to bring Your people together and gave him the same desire as David did, that is to build Your temple.  This assures and confirms to me that I can be used mightily in Your Name too.  This inspires me and draw me closer to You knowing that You placed and reveal Your desires and plans and use Gentiles like me to fulfill Your will for man.  I hope to be used Lord as You please but I want to have a humble heart as pure as You require it to be Lord.  Make me one, moved my heart the same way as You moved Cyrus’ heart.  May my life give nothing else but only GLory to You and Your Name forevermore.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
