TITLE: Josiah’s Reforms

Scripture:  2 Chronicles 34:1 - 33

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Josiah was only 8 years old when he reigned as king, way much younger than his grandfather (Manasseh), yet he reigned right as he did what was right in the eyes of God.  Literally a total opposite of how his grandfather started his reign.  Let’s compare and contrast.  Manasseh reigned at 12 years old, Josiah at 8years old.  Both were very young yet, Manasseh, possibly didn’t have the right foundation, because he was born when his father (Hezekiah) was sick and was also going through times.  Josiah on the other hand, was born during the time during the last years of Manasseh who repented and turned back to God.  I’m not sure if this has some influence over Josiah but one thing i learned is that Josiah’s name means “Supported by Yah” or “healed by Yah” so his name alone shows that God was with him.  And at a very young age, instead of being blinded by greed, selfishness, wealth, power, etc... He sought the God of his ancestor, David.  King Josiah is one of the few kings who sought God earnestly and wholeheartedly almost all the time of his reign.  He was determined and walked the path towards the Lord without wavering.  The Bible tells us that there was no king like Josiah who turned to the Lord with all his heart, soul, might according to the law of Moses, not even after his reign.  What an amazing character and he started at the age of 8.  Now, that’s admirable!  His seeking of the Lord led him to purge Judah and Jerusalem from any idols, high places, etc (sins).  He purified the land and the temple and had the temple repair.  According to my research, the whole people of Judah did not depart from the Lord during the entire reign of Josiah!  What an amazing legacy and work he did in his reign.  Now that’s influence and power!  

It was also in his reign that the book of the law was found.  The king tore his robe upon hearing of this news and sent his officials to inquire of this from the Lord’s prophet.  Prophetess Huldah, wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe.  Huldah said that God’s words speak of a disaster to Judah because of the sins of his fathers but He will not see this disaster for the King will die in peace.  Because of Josiah’s dedication to the Lord, God saved him from experiencing terrible disasters set for Judah’s wickedness and evil deeds.  Upon hearing this Josiah, gathered all the people and read the book of law to them and have them renewed their covenant to God.  The bible tells us that the people did not fail to follow the Lord as long as Josiah lived.  What a powerful influence and leadership Josiah had with his people!  May we follow his footsteps and walk in the ways of God.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, amazing Father and God.  I am grateful in awe of Your love and wonders to us.  Thank You because You see our hearts and despite of our deserved punishment, You saved us from it out of the abundance of Your love and grace.  Josiah, though he did what was right before You was still a product of sin, and the evil things his father did was tremendous that destruction and death is the only solution.  Yet God out of His great love for the people and David, saved Josiah and gave him a peaceful death.  Lord thank You because Your love still overcomes.  Thank You Lord and help me to always do what is right and not waver like Josiah.  May I have the same influence as Josiah did to Your people.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
