TITLE: Josiah Celebrates the Passover
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 36:1 - 27
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Josiah celebrated the passover like no other king did so as writting in the Bible. He provided for all the lay people 30,000 lambs and goats for the passover offerings and 3,000 cattles. Not only that, his officials also contributed voluntarily to the people, priests and levites. There are a few statements in this chapter that stood out like the gatekeepers at each gate need not to leave their post because the levites made the preparations for them. It speaks of unity and service to one another. Clearly because the King himself set an example by providing for the lay people what they needed for this event. As you can see, the king showed the example and the people followed. They did everything according to what was instructed by David on how to celebrate the passover. And in the whole process, we can see that Josiah was hands on in every details. Here we see the King and the priests/levites working together for the said event. Truly when the Spirit of the Lord is in the midst, there’s unity and peace.
The death of Josiah on the next paragraph was something that interested me. We see Josiah as a determined and focus king. He did what was right in the eyes of God yet, here we see Necho, king of Egypt, was called by God to be at war with Carchemish on the Euphrates. Yet Josiah did not believe his words. Josiah may be traditional and righteous but possibly too righteous that he cannot see that God will speak to someone outside the Israelites. Again this is just my own opinion. It could be that the reason why Josiah pursued Necho even if Necho already informed him that it was God who sent him to battle the Carchemish, was because Josiah did not believe that the people outside Judah or Israel will be capable of hearing from the Lord. Again, this is just speculations from my part but this is so far the only explanation i can think of why Josiah as righteous and determined he was, did not listen to Necho. And his actions paid the consequence of not listening. He was wounded and died. The whole Israelites in Jerusalem mourned his death. The famous Jeremiah (prophet) even composed a lament song for the king. It was truly a great loss for Judah.
Prayer:
Lord thank You for shedding light on Your word. Though these are speculations and thoughts alone, I know there’s something I can learn from it. Lord help me to be humble at all times and never limit Your greatness and power and grace and love. Sometimes, we feel we are blessed and loved and when others feel the same way, instead of being happy and seeing how great Your love is, we remained skeptical and unbelieving that Our God will show or reveal Himself to someone who does not believe in Him. Lord, help me to be sensitive and see that Your power or greatness or love is not limited by man’s decision or actions. Help me to test the spirit at all times that I may confirm that You are behind every move and word spoken. Give me a sensitive spirit that will sense You immediately. Thank You Jesus for Your word today. May it become alive in me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
