TITLE: Nehemiah Helps the Poor

Scripture:  Nehemiah 5:1 - 19

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Nehemiah has become the governor of Judah at that time and his focus was finishing the work God has called him to do, which is to finish the wall.  However he received outcries from the men and their wives against their own poeple, the officials and nobles of Jerusalem.  Concerns about taxes and corruptions were brought out that led for the people to put their daughters and sons to slavery.  Upon hearing this, Nehemiah was angry, specific to what’s going on.  He had a good work position in the palace, next to the King as his cupbearer, but he left that to fulfill the task God called him to do yet the people themselves whom he is helping built the wall for are taking advantage of one another.  So Nehemiah called for a meeting for all the nobles and officials, nehemiah was angry but he used logic to show the people that what they are doing is not right.  He did not allow his emotions to get the best of him.  He spoke the words clear with sound reason that the people (nobles and officials) didn’t even know what to say back because they knew they sinned.  All they could reply is to that they will do what Nehemiah had said.  Whatever our reaons are for doing sin, it will and can never justify the wrong we did.  True repentance speaks no further or offer no excuse of one’s doing but focuses on the solution to correct the wrong done!  There’s no point of trying to retrace your steps as to what led you to sin or to do it, because in the end, YOU did it!  So You made the decision, so instead of trying to retrace everything back and finding someone else to blame, like the devil or your enemy or your circumstances or etc, deal with it head on and face the consequences.  The nobles and officials will suffer lost because they will have to return what they have taken from the people, they will suffer their profits because they will no longer charge extra but it was the right thing to do.  So we ought to focus on the solution and not dwell on how sin came to be!  And this is what the nobles and the officials did.

Nehemiah made sure that the nobles and officials made their promise in front of the priest to bring weight to their words.  And so they did and they did as they have promised too.  Praise God!  Note though, that Nehemiah, in his reign as the governor of Jerusalem, he didnt ask for his portion from the people.  You see, the people are obliged to give or offer food for the governor but Nehemiah, knowing the condition of the people at that time, didn’t bother for what is rightfully his for his heart is for the people.  All his sacrifices, he made sure to present it to God.  Not that God is required to give him favor because of his sacrifices but he presented his sacrifices to strengthen his request for favor but in the end it is still God’s perogative to give him or not.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Thank You for a wonderful and amazing lesson today in the life of Nehemiah once again.  Thank You because You have spoken to me the truth of Your heart for us or for Your people.  Like Nehemiah, You’ve been putting off what You deserve so Your people can eat and live.  Thank You Lord for this; for Your amazing love for us.  Lord thank You for reminding me to always focus on the solution and that there;’s no point of tracking down the origin of sin and trying to find someone to blame for in the end, the decision was mine.  Thank You for reminding me of this Lord.  Forgtive me Jesus for the sins I have done, cleanse me and purify my heart, my thoughts, my body, my soul, everything in me Lord.  I promise in Your Name to decide in accordance to Your guidance and not my own.  I promise to seek the truth and not hide from false hope or reality.  I promise to seek joy in You and not temporary fleshly pleasures.  Help me Lord for I cannot do it on my own.  I need Your love and Grace that will empower me to choose You!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
