TITLE: Ezra’s Prayer About Intermarriage
Scripture: Ezra 9: 1 - 15
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Chapter 9 was Ezra’s prayer regarding a specific sin of Judah, one that is obvious and becoming a norm in the people, the intermarrying of women of other nations or races, those that God specifically said not to do, which is a clear disobedience to God’s command. Upon hearing of such sin of the people and that this sin was led primarily of the officials and leaders of Judah, this saddened Ezra and possibly brought him anger yet his heart was burdened with the sin of the people. Ezra came to God to intercede for them - what a heart! I mean most people today, when people sinned, instead of feeling the burden of that sin against our God, we care less. People are just thinking of themselves and do not want to be involve of the other person’s sin, it’s as if, it is his personal dealing with God. But Ezra as a priest and as someone who is well versed of the law, knew that we are to carry each other’s burden. All the more the burden of sin against our God. He interceded for the people and as Christians, we are to intercede for our brothers and sisters. We don’t see this happening today anymore, most prayers consist of ourselves, our needs, the need of the church, the need of the nation, the need of the world but even the prayers we prayer for the church, the nation or the world, are specifically linked to us and not to someone else. Even when we intercede for others, our prayer exclude us from sin. What i mean is, we consider the sins of others as their sins alone and not ours. However Ezra knew that was the case. Ezra was not guilty of this sin, literally, yet upon hearing what the people did, he considered himself part of it and prayed like he was the sinner. Today, we forget that the sins of our neighbors in a way reflect on us too because we have a responsibility to one another. If we think this way, we will have more drive to help one another take the right path and decisions in life. We ought to learn from Ezra who is well versed of the law and a devoted student and teacher of it. We ought to carry one another’s burden. His prayer says it all. May we have the same heart as Ezra did.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, praise You over all the Heaven and Earth. I worship You alone Lord. Thank you for such a wonderful and eye opening lesson today. Now i have a deeper understanding of what “Carrying one another’s burden” means, or when you asked Cain where Abel is and he answered, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The truth is, we are! The life of Ezra showed me this and I want to thank You for opening my eyes to it. Lord, this is something i learned today and the challenge really is to apply it. In a world where people care less to others and mostly about themselves only, it will be a struggle to intercede and carry other’s burden as my own. But Lord I ask You to enlarge my compassion and heart for the people. Lord I have a deep desire to know and seek You but I know that You want me to love You and love others too. I know myself and right now, I care less than how You want me to care or have compassion to others. So Lord, build it in me. For I know, I can’t push myself to care for others. Lord give me the heart for the lost or those who are in need of You. Give me compassion and love for them just as I love and have compassion for myself. Help me Lord to do what is right and stir the wheel of my life to the direction You want me to take. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
