TITLE: Nehemiah’s Prayer
Scripture: Nehemiah 1:1 - 11
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Nehemiah was King Artaxerxes’ cupbearer and had a great burden for Judah for he is a descendant of Judah himself. We can see that the first chapter of the book of Nehemiah showed his burden for Jerusalem, specifically to the Wall of Jerusalem. He heard the Judah are being gathered by God back to their home yet he heard a troubling news about the wall of Jerusalem. Remember in King Cyrus’ time, when the foundation of the temple was laid down, the people were afraid because they were working in an open field, yet God protected them. In the time of Darius, the temple was completed and Ezra led everyone (the levites, priests, temple workers, etc) back to Jerusalem to the temple for their duties and during this time, the wall was still ruined. Now Nehemiah came, an Israelite serving at the throne of King Artaxerxes as a cupbearer. Another man God used to rebuilt Jerusalem. Chapter one showed us that those who have a burden greatly on the work of the Lord will be used for it. Nehemiah’s burden was to fix the wall of Jerusalem and God used him to fix that. Ezra’s burden was for the people and their sin, and God used him to drive the people of Judah to confess their sin. So the first thing I learned in this chapter is that what our hearts’ burden is usually what God calls us for. So the question now is, what’s your heart’s burden today?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, great and mighty God! Amazing Lord and King! Wonderful Saviour and One and Only Glorious Lord of all. Thank You for a great lesson today. Thank You because You call us to do Your work that is closest to our hearts. I am grateful because You place the burden in our hearts and brought a deep desire in our hearts for it so when You called us to do the work You call us to do, it is easier for us to say yes because we want it too. Thank You for such great and valuable thought today. Lord I pray that You reveal to me my heart’s desire that I may do the work You have called me to do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
