TITLE: Opposition to the Rebuilding

Scripture:  Nehemiah 4:1 - 23

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Another great lesson today from Nehemiah.  In this chapter we see that even after Nehemiah shut Sanballat and Tobiah, they didnt stop in harrasing and opposing the rebuilding of the walls.  In fact, they became more agreesive in their opposition.  Throwing negative comments one after another to the people of God.  But as you can see, Nehemiah’s response is still not to nurture their negative comments, instead, Nehemiah went to God and prayed to Him.  So Nehemiah once again dismissed the negative comments coming from the opposition and focus on the task at hand but he also made sure that he present this troubling concern to God instead of entertaining or worrying about it.  Note that when Sanballat and Tobiah saw that Nehemiah was not paying attention to their words, they plotted to fight against the people of Jerusalem.  Upon hearing this, Nehemiah again prayed and posted guards day and night.  Now, let’s look at this deeper.  There’s a threat to the task God called them to do, Nehemiah didn’t entertain the threat but he didn’t disregard it as well.  He presented it to God in prayer and he also took actions by placing guards on post.  So we ought to learn from Nehemiah that when opposition comes our way in fulfilling the task God has set for us, we ought to lay it down to God in prayer and also act at the same time but in accordance to God’s direction.  God didn’t say fight so Nehemiah just set the guards on post for protection.  Nehemiah didn’t act offensively, his actions were all on defense.

Moving on, we see that the negativity or the opposition from Sanballat and Tobiah was starting to creep in to the people as verses 10 to 12 showed that the people of Judah are starting to get tired and they aired out to Nehemiah their concerns regarding the plots from Sanballat and Tobiah.  Let us be careful of the negativity we hear from our oppositions and let us not allow it to cloud our own perception and decision in doing the task God has called us to do.  But thank God for He gave wisdom to Nehemiah on how to deal with these concerns.  Nehemiah encouraged the people that the work they’re doing is of God’s and He is great and awesome and to fight for their families.  Note that after Nehemiah spoke positive words of encouragement to the people, their enemies found out that they already knew about their enemies’ plan plus God was stopping their enemies plans against them.  So the people of Jerusalem went back to work.  See how God works?  When opposition comes, we lay it down to God.  Pray about it and we should encourage ourselves to continue and seek God’s hands working.  Note that only when the people saw that God is frustrating the plans of their enemies did they return back to work.  So they realized that the plots made by Sanballat and Tobiah are not coming to pass or it could be that it’s taking so long for it to come to realize and then they knew and believed that God is stopping or frustrating their enemies’ plans against them.  So they continue to work.  So when we pray to God to deliver us from our enemies’ plans, we ought to believe and open our eyes to see God working in fixing our problems - this will drive us to go back to the work that God has called us to do.

Note however that even if the people knew that the plans of their enemies are futile because God made it so, they were still vigilant as they continued working with their swords on their side, ready to fight if war strikes out.  Now we should be doing the same when we do the work of the Lord, we ought to be ready and prepared for war because opposition will always rise when we are doing the will of the Lord.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Glorious one and mighty Lord.  You are truly amazing and wonderful.  Thank You for another great lesson.  Thank You for reminding me to be vigilant as always and be ready for battle for when I walk or do Your will, opposition will rise at any time.  But I can be assured that You are there to deliver me and stop my enemies.  Help me to deal with troubling circumstances with Your wisdom Lord the same way that Nehemiah was able to deal with the concerns of the people or their opposition because of Your wisdom.  Remind me Lord that You are greater and awesome and for Your work, I should be ready at all times.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
