TITLE: The Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem

Scripture:  Nehemiah 12:1 - 47

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ The start of this chapter spoke of the Priests and the Levites who returned to Jerusalem and who are appointed and listed.  But I want to direct the focus on the dedication fo the wall.  Note that there were 2 choirs set one to each of the opposite direction.  One choir was led by Ezra the priest (teacher of the Law), the other was led by nehemiah (governor).  These clearly depicts how a city structure should be.  Both leaders, the spiritual and the physical (we have the priest and the governor) walk together accompanied by joyful choir singing and celebrating with great joy in praising God for His goodness and greatness for them.  Also note that the Levites and priests first purified themselves before they purified the people.  We ought to understand that to have a blamless or righteous nation, we need to have our leaders set the example first.  And we’re talking about the church and the government together.  Spiritual aspect of each individual is a priority to both the church and the government because man is a spirit by nature and the body is just a vessel so whether you are a priest or a governor, each leader must be purified before God and walk in accordance to God’s commands and words.  Another thing that caught my attention is the diligence and committment of everyone to give their daily contributions, tithes, firstfruits and offerings to the temple.  This applies to all men and even the government officials are subject to it.  It was a duty and not a voluntary giving because they made an agreement before God and they sealed it with a vow and a curse altogether so each one was careful to obey and follow what has been promised.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, great and mighty One!  I am forever amazed of Your greatness and love.  Thank You Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords for all the marvelous lessons You taught me in a daily basis.  Thank You Lord for confirming once again that I am a spirit by nature so my priority is in the spiritual aspect of my life as I am a spirit.  Lord make me realize this every day because many times I am very forgetful and I dont want ever to neglect this truth so I will live to the fullness of the life You give me.  Help me Lord to realize the potential of myself as a spiritual being and not on a physical level.  Open my eyes, ears and heart to the reality of my true being that I may worship You in spirit and in truth.  Give me the wisdom to clearly understand what I must do and what I must prioritize so I may choose what is true and right between my physical and spiritual options in life.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: The New Residents of Jerusalem

Scripture:  Nehemiah 11:1 - 36 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After the reading of the law and the confessions of sins and the sealing of the agreement between the people and God, the people spoke among themselves and cast lots to appoint one out of the ten of them to live in Jerusalem.  So here we see that the 3 tribes mentioned; Levites, Judah and Benjamin, casted lots for each of their families and 1 out of ten of them will stay and settle in the city to take care of the temple, the Lord’s house. The people took their vow seriously and made sure that the house of God is neglected.  They sacrificed and offered one out of 10 of them to be dedicated solely to taking care of the temple.  They all agreed voluntarily to this, the goal is to ensure that God’s temple is taken care of and the required duties and responsibilities in the temple are done consistently without failure.  They have ensured that a representative settled in Jerusalem for specific duties, from gatekeepers, temple workers, musicians, priest, levites, etc.

Let us learn from the people today.  They made a promise and the very next step after the promise they made to God is acting on it!  So when we do make a promise to God, let us not procrastinate in fulfilling it.  Let’s take our words seriously and this should be true not only to the promises we make to the Lord but also to others. But emphasis on this is the words we give out to our God.  When we say, we worship Him, let our whole being becomes a proof of that worship.  Let us be a man or woman of our words.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, glorious King and wonderful savior.  I am amazed of the great things You do and how faithful and true You are to Your words.  Lord I desire to be the same.  I want to be cautious and aware of the words that come out of my mouth as I want to be the person who walks the talk and not just say it.  I want to be able to do what I say and practice what I preach.  Lord, this desire in my heart I know, comes from You because a leader, a strong one, especially one that upholds and represent Your Name, must be a role model.  So Lord, give me the strength and help I need to just do what I say.  I do not want to be a talker but not a doer.  Help me to follow and obey You and ensure that every word I say, I will take to heart.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: The Agreement of the People

Scripture:  Nehemiah 10:1 - 39 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ This chapter speaks of the people’s agreement to God.  What caught my attention is verse 29 when it was written that “...(they) bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commandments..”  Now take note that the people willingly agreed to a covenant with God and subjected themselves to a vow and a curse.  So note that a covenant with God includes a promise and accountability because there’s consequence if a promise is not done.  Note that they are conscious and aware that they agreed to an oath and a curse.  Many people today make promises but do not understand the value of being accountable to it.  They didn’t realize that a promise/vow/agreement includes a consequence/curse.  So we ought to realize this especially when we make promises to our God, the King, and even to others.

Upon going thru the agreement, the people specifically stated their responsibilities in the sealed agreement.  The main promise is to follow and obey, then they promised not to give their sons and daughters to foreigners in marriage, the rest of the promises are specific to taking care of the house of God.  The specifics are regarding giving: the giving of the firstfruits, the giving of their contributions, the giving of a third of shekels, etc.  In the end, they promised not to neglect the house of the Lord!  So this really is an agreement of the workers of God, temple workers, priests, levites, musicians, etc.  It can be summarized into 3 promises: 1) to follow the Law and obey the commands 2) to consecrate themselves (remaining pure), 3) Never to neglect the house of the Lord.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Amazing God and King.  Thank You for this revelation of promises of Your workers.  Lord I am amazed that the agreement can be summarized into two concrete promises.  And honestly Lord, it will be a struggle to do or obey on my own.  That’s why I need Your help.  Ultimately the main promise is to follow the Law and obey Your commands but in doing so, I must consecrate myself and remain pure, and ensure that I do not neglect Your house (Temple/people).  Lord open my eyes to the truth always and help me to obey them wholeheartedly.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: Cain’s Life Lesson

Scripture:  Genesis 4

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ 

1) Cain's Offering - Our Gift To God is a Reflection of His priority in our lives (Vs. 3 - "some of the fruits of the soil")

Cain was the FIRSTBORN of Adam and Eve; Cain was the tiller of the ground - FARMER - meaning he was the food provider.  During this time, men ate only vegetables and fruits.  It was only during Noah's time that God allowed the eating of animals.  But during the time of Cain and Abel, they were vegetarian.  And as the farmer of the family, Cain was the "Food" provider of the family. This made me believe that when Cain had his harvest, he had the best of his harvest but he didnt choose it for God.  Possibly, when he saw the harvest and saw the good fruits and vegetables, he was thinking of his family; of how the "huge" squash can feed his family for 2-3 days; or how Eve would love the sweetest and reddish apple; or how Adam would be very happy to have his bundle supplies of bananas; or how Abel will be smiling ear to ear when he sees that Cain brought baskets of strawberries for him.  - possibly these were all in Cain's mind and after separating everything for him and his family; whatever's left, he chose for God.  

We could translate this in our lives, not only from the tithes and offerings we give to God from money we earn but it could also mean the time we give to God.  Anything that we give to the Lord; time, praise, worship, giving, etc. When we set our day, do we schedule everything else before our time with God?  When we go to church, do we complain when praise and worship for God go beyond 30 minutes?  Our Gift to God reflects His priority in our lives!  So the real question when we complain of a long praise and worship is, what is our priority, to wait upon the Lord or to get the church service over with?

GOD’S RESPONSE: God gave Cain a reminder and a wise advice to fight sin (vs 6 - 7) But instead of listening, Cain did the opposite of God's advice.

2) Cain's Sin - Our treatment to others reflect our love for God (Vs 8 - 9)

vs 9, cain replied to God "Am I my brother's keeper?" - The truth is, YES WE ARE!  We ARE ONE ANOTHER'S CARETAKERS!

Mark 12:31 (the 2nd commmandment) is to love our neighbors as ourselves

Galatians 6:2 says to carry one another's burden 

So the truth is...We are one another's keeper!  So we ought to love others as obedience to God's commands.  When we love God, we obey His commands!

GOD’S RESPONSE: God removed Cain's ability to till the ground and Cain became a wanderer

God's punishment is literally the solution to Cain's problem.  The root of Cain's sin was because he did not prioritize God in his life because he was the provider of food that brings life to his family.  In a way, he was the sustainer of life of his family, which cultivated pride in him.  So God took his ability to provide food so now he has no other way but to trust God to provide for him!  Becoming a wanderer was also for him because when he stays with God, he will surely die for sin cannot exist with God.  So the curse he got from the Lord was all for his benefits.

3) Cain's fear - Our fears reflect our distance away from the Lord.

verse 13 - 14 shows, that Cain only feared for his life when he knew that he will have to get away from God's presence.  So without God in our lives, fear comes!  But fear vanishes when God is around!

Ps. 118:6 says, "The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid.  What man can do to me?"

GOD’S RESPONSE: God gave Cain a marked that protected him from murderers.

This marked protected Cain and his whole clan!  vs 24 showed that Cain's descendant murdered someone and after he did that, he hold on to the promise that God gave to Cain to be protected as well!

TITLE: The Israelites Confess Their Sins

Scripture:  Nehemiah 9:1 - 38

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ This chapter talks about the Israelites confession of sins but before I dig deeper on their confession, I want to point out verse 3 of this chapter.  It says in verse 3 that they stood and read from the book of the Law for a quarter of the day and another quarter for confession and worshipping.  Now that’s amazing!  I mean today, not many people read, prayer and worship to God for even just a quarter of the day.  So if there’s 24 hours a day, a quarter of a day would mean 6hours.  So they read the book of the Law for 6 hours and another 6 hours for prayer and worship, where confession is part of prayer.  Wow!  I mean, that’s how dedicated the people were after the victory that God gave them for the completion of the temple and the wall of the city.  I just wonder how many hours we spend with God today?  Sometimes, we just even try to squeeze a couple of minutes to utter a short prayer.  But these Israelites spent 12hours in total in the presence of the Lord and they didn’t complain or murmur of how long or tired they were!  Today, a short 5-minute prayer seems to be a hassle for people already.  What happened?  I know I am guilty of this too but I pray that we will have the same hunger and passion as these people were before that we would desire to spend half a day to God alone.

From verse 6 of this chapter down to the end, we can see the people’s confession.  Note that their confession includes their sins as a nation and not just their own personal sin.  In fact, people were speaking of the sins of the Israelites from Abram’s time but moreover as they confess their sins, the emphasis of their prayer is the Grace, the Love and the Glory of the Lord.  The confession started with praises and worship from the One and True God, followed with God’s decision to choose Abram out of everyone then for a promise of a nation (emphasizing on God’s choice - their words spoke of humility before God who made the decision to choose Abram out of many others).  Then the confession was led to God’s compassion and love for the people as He saw the sufferings of His people and how He delivered them from the hands of the Egyptians (proclaiming God’s power and glory).  All throughout the confession, God is glorified.  Yes, they spoke of their wickedness and disobedience and rebellion but it was followed by God being a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.  Hallelujah!  Every time the people sinned, they suffered but when they cried out to God, God delivered them and kept them safe and gave them even more than what they deserved!  The confession of the people does not highlight the sins of the people but the greatness of their God!  This pattern of confession was repeated numerous times in this chapter and it was ended with a commitment from the people to God, both a verbal and written vow/promise from the Israelites.  Amen!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Amazing God!  Truly no one is like You and no one can ever match Your Greatness and Glory!  Thank You for a wonderful revelation about confession today!  I am so amazed that I stopped and did my devotion because You have a great message for me today!  Now I understand the true meaning of confession.  I should not highlight the sins I made but Your greatness and Your marvelous works in my life despite of my sins.  Lord thank You that You taught me this today.  Help me Lord to incorporate this in my prayer daily.  May I always highlight Your greatness in my prayer and not my weaknesses or my failures.  For You are greater than any of my weaknesses and failures so my focus should be in You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: Ezra Reads the Law

Scripture:  Nehemiah 8:1 - 18

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Chapter 8 of the book of Nehemiah was a huge event, a milestone for the Israelites.  After the wall was completed, verse 1 says ALL, not the men, not just the women, not just the elders, but ALL, all the people came together as one and told Ezra to bring out the Law of Moses, which God commanded for Israel.  Now all the people came and requested for God’s words.  What an amazing and uplifting scenario.  After all the troubles and fears they had, victory was given to them by God and the 1st thing they asked is for the word of God read to them!  Hallelujah!  Clearly, the Holy Spirit is working greatly in the midst of the people in the governance of Nehemiah and Ezra.  As you can see, both leaders, government and church, are true believers of the Lord and are walking in righteousness so it also reflects to the people.  The people who are governed by righteous men are righteous themselves.  The leader’s qualities and behaviors are reflected in his people and Nehemiah (governor) and Ezra (priest) are both seekers of the Lord and as we see in this chapter, the people themselves became seekers of God as well.  Both Nehemiah and Ezra respect and honor God and His words and the people did the same.  As Ezra reads the word, the people stood up in respect and honor.  Note that when the word was being read, I’m not sure how many but some people were grieving, possibly because they thought of their past yet God stopped the people from doing so and told them to rejoice!  For that day was Holy to God and His joy was the strength of His people.  So we ought to understand that there’s a time for everything but when we are in the presence of the Holy One, joy is a given.  His presence especially when He is pleased brings about joy that gives strength to the people.  So our goal is to please God in every meeting so His joy becomes our strength to carry on our daily lives.  Meeting with God is not about us, but about Him.  So our focus is not about how we feel about our situation or what we went thru or going thru, instead meeting with the Lord is about God.  About pleasing Him and giving Him joy, in return, we get the strength we need to face whatever we are going thru, or whatever our past, present and future will be.  So let us take note of this and make sure to set our goal and priority right when we meet the Lord.  Amen!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, loving God and amazing King!  I praise and glorify Your Name Jesus for You alone deserves it!  Lord thank You for a wonderful and valuable lesson today.  Thank You because truly, we need righteous leaders in our lives.  Help me to become one that I may lead the people You placed under my care in righteousness.  Lord remind me always that meeting You or being in Your presence is not about me literally.  My heart and mind must be set to You.  The good thing about You Lord is that the moment i put You first or priority in my life, I become part of the priority.  So Lord help me to always direct my focus to the right goal.  Remind me Lord that Your joy is my strength and if i want to be strong enough to go through my daily battles, I ought to seek for Your joy.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: The List of the Exiles who Returned

Scripture:  Nehemiah 7:1 - 73

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Nehemiah’s task was to build the wall and he did it!  He accomplished his task with God working with him side by side but note that after the completion of this task, God entrusted him with another task.  This time, to gather the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families.  God brings His people together but before He gather them up together, He prepares a place for them.  Only when the temple and the wall was completed, did God entrust in Nehemiah’s heart to register the people by families.  If we think of this as a rational human being, it would be better to register them before working on the wall or maybe while they were doing the work of the wall, in this way, everyone is accounted for and everyone has a part on the task.  But Nehemiah knew that not everyone has a part on the task, only those who are called.  Also, there’s a reason or a purpose why only one task was given to Nehemiah at a time.  It could be that it does not matter who take part on the work for God has set apart those who are to work on the task, or it could be that this shows only that God only wants volunteer workers and not force the people to do His task that’s why, no record of families or men were made during the work and only after it was finished.  However after everything, after the victory and the completion of the task, one of the greatest event happened, it was the reading of the law, which will be for tomorrow’s devotional topic.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, gracious Father and wonderful King.  Thank You for You do not force people to do Your work.  The truth is You give the desire in our hearts and You give us a willing heart to do Your will.  Lord give me the same heart that I may do as You plan for my life.  Thank You for YOu showed me today that the number of people doing your work is not of importance to You, because in the end, the work was done because of You and not by anyone else.  Help us not to feel unfairly when we see others not doing Your work and that we see ourselves doing it.  Give me the peace and understanding that You do not force people to do You will and if they decide not to do it, then it is their decision.  But for those who do decide to do Your work, we are given the privilege and honor to do so.  Let us not feel bad when we see others not doing anything.  But instead, give us the heart to see for everyone when it is time of celebration but during work time, help us to focus on our own calling and not on others.  Amazing Lord what You are teaching me today.  A true act of humility.  To always include others when it is a celebration of joy but to mind my own calling when it comes to work.  I can offer encouragement and positive words (Your words) but in the end, the decision is theirs.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

TITLE: Further Opposition to the Rebuilding

Scripture:  Nehemiah 6:1 - 19

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ What a strong and great story of victory for Nehemiah.  This chapter shows that when we focus on the work of the Lord, we will receive and achieve our victory from God.  Opposition will rise up and it will grow in strength and in number as we continue to do the work of God but it will never stop us unless we allow it to.  Nehemiah was attacked by so many negativity every time.  According to this chapter, Tobiah and sanballat, sent him messages after messages.  Other messages show a proposal to meet and discuss, possibly an open meeting for reconcilation but Nehemiah had a discerning spirit because he relied in the Lord.  He knew that Sanballat and Tobiah had other motives in wanting to meet with him.  Sometimes, our enemies send us messages or information of a possible reconcillation or peace yet it is a mask to their genuine purpose.  So always rely on God and pursue the work He has called us to do because when we do His work, we will surely succeed no matter what.  So Nehemiah continued the work despite of the messages that Sanballat and Tobiah sent him.  The meeting requests and accusations that most men are tempted to defend themselves from.  Most of the time, when we know we do the right thing and we are accused of the opposite, we have it in us to want to speak out and clear our names, yet Nehemiah put the work of the Lord first, making it a priority than clearing his name.  As we read in this chapter, some prophets in Jerusalem already speak against Nehemiah because they were hired by Sanballat and Tobiah.  So there were people, their own people, talking against Nehemiah and not just the foreigners.  So the devil proceed in putting damages to Nehemiah using words, first from foreigners (Tobiah and Sanballat), and when it didnt succed, the devil proceed in hiring one of his own.  Nehemiah’s own people and family.  In our lives, we ought to notice and be cautious of this.  When God call us to do His will, there will be opposition.  At first from the people who considers us enemies, then the devil will infiltrate our own family and use them to damage our soul so the weight of burden will become heavier.  Note that even after the wall was completed, there were still opposition to it and still from people closest to Nehemiah. But do not be intimidated!  But like Nehemiah, let us stand firm to the work God has called us to do.  The same way as Noah did.  To focus our eyes on the work or the purpose or the calling He has for us and run the race diligently and perseverance and we will receive our Victory from God Himself!  Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, great and mighty God!  I am amazed of your wonderful love and wisdom.  Thank You for the encouragement to continue on to do Your task!  Lord remind me always to focus on You and not waver around or divert my focus on something else.  Thank You for letting me know that opposition will always rise up when we do Your work.  Help me Lord to cling on to You no matter how deep or heavy the opposition is.  I know You are stronger and mightier!  Let my eyes be fixed to the goal and You promised victory!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
