TITLE: Zophar
Scripture: Job 20:1 - 29
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Now we have Zophar who from the very start of his response as written is chapter 20 is already driven by his personal issues, knowledge and emotions. Verses 1-3 of this chapter revealed to us that Zophar was greatly disturbed of Job's response, why? Because he said that he heard a rebuke that dishonors "him". So what disturbed him from Job's words are not the reality that Job was feeling depressed or that he was not seeing much hope or that he is in the edge of helplessness and suicide. What bothered him is a rebuke that Job spoke that dishonors him! Not even God but just specific to himself! Let's stop for a moment and realize this. Zophar clearly showed us a man who has an ego. After Job's many words placing blame on God, Zophar didn't react but the moment Job spoke of his friends who were not of help to him and them being his tormentors (So Job accused them of the ones tormenting him - in short they are the ones causing him more pain than what he was experiencing already, which is true by the way), Zophar reacted to it and not nicely. He continued on saying that his own understanding inspires him to reply. So Job spoke something that struck his ego and Zophar was hurt by it and his own "knowledge" or "understanding" inspired him to reply back. Where's God's words or understanding in all this? Job's friends were supposed to be the mediator for him but clearly, they were so busy airing out their own understanding, their own knowledge, their own version of the truth and left God out of the confrontation. So clearly, Zophar’s response in this chapter to Job is driven by his own emotions and own understanding. He was speaking for himself and not for God. And that’s when things get ugly when we leave God out of our arguments or conflicts. Then of course, there was no stopping Zophar from speaking his piece and again, he points back his finger to Job as the sinner. This is a typical mistake that most of us go thru without understanding what happens. We only realize it after the damage has been done. We ought to understand that a person in suffering speaks of words out of their emotions and though it may come with logic, the words chosen are based on their current emotional state. And when we listen to it intently, we would understand that no matter how harsh and rude their words are to us, they were literally not directed to us. So we ought to always step back and see it in God’s eyes not ours.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, gracious and merciful Father. Thank You for a wonderful learning today. Thank You for reminding me not to become Zophar who was clearly intersted to be heard and making sure his reputation or image is clean and without sin. He is quick to point out Job’s sin without realizing that in the process of doing so, he sinned. Lord help me to be cautious in handling conflicts or confrontations. Help me to be open and see things in a bigger picture. Show me how You view the situation that I might get a better understanding than my own. Guide me Lord through the process and help me become the person that best represents You to someone else. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
