TITLE: When God Calls Us...

Scripture:  Genesis 9

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Noah and his family survived the flood and God called him to go out of the Ark.  Noah’s first action was to build an altar and sacrifice to God and the sweet aroma of Noah’s offering reached God.  And God said that He will never again do what He did becuase of it.

Chapter 9, speaks of God’s response to Noah after his offering to God.  God blessed Noah and his family and commanded them to go and multiply to fill the earth  God also gave them the animals for food and made a covenant with Noah, a promise that never again will the flood did what it did, in the presence of a rainbow.  The remaining verses then spoke of Noah’s 3 sons, Shem, Japeth and Ham.  Noah was drunk and naked one day and Ham (the youngest) saw him first but instead of helping his father, he went to his brothers and told them about their father’s condition.  It was Japeth and Shem who came to help their father and they were turning their heads all the while not to see their father’s nakedness so not to disrespect him.  This is the summary of chapter 9.

When God calls us...

1) God blesses us before He even commands us to do something for Him (vs 1)

Bless means to protect, to make holy, to favor, and to make happy.

So God has protected, made us holy, favored us and made us happy for the task He called us to do even before calling us.  Amazing!  So even if we don’t have the skills or talents or knowledge of the task that He called us to do, He made sure that we are already blessed specific to it, meaning we are protected to do it, made holy to do it, favored for the task and made us happy to do it.  Wow!

There’s one article I read talking about blessings.  The writer said that people today considers material things as blessings: like cars, money, house, food, gadgets, work, etc... When the truth is, those were not the blessings!  Those were just the tools to give us the blessings!  The true blessings are the comfort, peace, protection, safety, convenience, ease, satisfaction, etc that those bring in our lives.  So note that even if we do not have the talents, skills or the tools we need to do what He called us to do, know in your heart that before He called us to do it, HE has blessed us already!  What an amazing God!

2) God equips us (vs 3)

God called noah and his family to multiply and then he gave him the tool he needed to do just that.  He gave them more food - animals and plants are both food for humans.

God has given us the following commandments:

A) Love God

B) Love Others

C) Go and make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them the ways of the Lord

To fulfill A and B, you need love.  While to do C, you need God.  1 John 4:16 says that God is love.  So in reality, to fulfill A, B, and C, all we need is God!  And God has given Himself for us.  So He truly has equipped us to do what He has commanded us to do!  Amazing!

3) God’s calling comes with a promise of success (vs 9 - 13)

The rainbow represents God’s promise to Noah.  It symbolizes victory!  Victory from the flood and future victories from the rain in their lives.  It is an assurance of their win because Noah obeyed :)

Our success in God’s calling for us is found in our obedience not in the result of our task.  Noah just experienced a tragic event in his life.  The death of all his friends and all the people on earth was traumatic for him, yet instead of God promising not to rain anymore, he just promised a rainbow.  This promise of God clearly tells Noah that it is still going to rain Noah, but when it does, you’ll see my rainbow, my promise to you.  Now many times, we have our own expectations when we do the work of the Lord and when we don’t see the result (the result we want), we get disappointed and feel like we must have done something wrong.  But the reality is, God does not measure our success in the result of what we did for Him, because the result is His.  He determines the result, not us.  He measures our success in our obedience to His calling.  When He said pray for this man, did we really pray?  Even if we decide to go and talk to the man and comfort him and the man was very happy and grateful and maybe even accepted Jesus in his life because of what you did but if God called you to pray and you didn;t do that, it doesn’t matter.  Because what matter is how faithful you are to God, to His words, to His commands...

Just like the 3 sons of Noah, as children, they were called to obey and honor their parents.  But what Ham did showed disrespect while Shem and Japeth honored Noah despite of the fact that what Noah did was inappropriate.  They were faithful to their calling us sons and so they were rewarded, unlike Ham.  So our obedience to God is based on God’s calling for us not on other people, not on the situations, not on whatever circumstances.  

So let’s obey because our success is simply based on our ability to follow!

Noah’s story was the first story in Genesis and there was a time that I wondered why his story came first.  Well, now I understand.  Aside from that his story came first, Noah also teaches what we ought to learn first.  Noah teaches us to listen to God, have faith in His words, and obey!
