TITLE: Job
Scripture: Job 16:1-22
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ After Eliphaz emphasized to Job the facts of the situation, literally telling Job that only sin is the cause of his sufferings (though this is not the case in this situation), Job was tired of listening and now, let out his true emotions of them. Before I proceed, let me point out that Eliphaz and Job’s friends, gave him only one solution to his problems (as if it’s the only way). But this way means, Job had to lie and admit that he sinned. So Job refused to accept this solution because he knew in his mind and heart that he was blameless. So Job in this chapter is just getting frustrated and angry at his friends. Verse 2 showed that Job told them that they were miserable comforters (which in truth, they were because they did not bring comfort to Job, instead they brought accusations to him). They were also clearly did not choose Job’s side in this matter. In fact, they opposed Job that’s why they contradicted what Job says (that he was innocent and without sin). Verse 4 showed that Job’s friends were clearly not on his side when Job said that he too can speak like them, he could make fine speeches against them, and shake his head at them. So these are what his friends are doing to him. Spoke against him and shook their heads at him. So Job is not only feeling the opposition through their words but even from their physical actions. This should also teach us that our actions reveals are true emotions. We can pretend to be a friend but our hearts will always be revealed in our words and actions. So always check our hearts and make sure that it is aligned in God’s.
At this time, Job was clearly not only confused of who God really is but has took a major turn of what he believes to be true about Him. If you read on further, you can see that Job has pointed the blame on God on what happened to him. The next verses showed that Job put the responsibility of everything bad in his life to God. Telling God that He has worn him out; that God has turned him over to the ungodly; that God tears him in anger, etc. At the end of this chapter, Job pointed out that only “intercessor” is his friend and he pleaded to God like he pleaded to his friend. What a sad end of this chapter but Job was not done yet because chapter 17 is still a continuation of his speech. But clearly at this time, Job knew that God was his only hope for salvation but his knowledge of Him has been twisted that he holds God sole responsible for what has happened to him.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You because Job’s life is full of lessons and his friends were great examples of what we ought to be and not to be as a friend. Lord, help me to recognize my actions and to avoid becoming like any of Job’s friends when comforting someone. Job’s friends pinned him down and let him to think negatively about God because they were so adamant in their own solution to Job’s problems. They were so focused on Job’s sin that they forgot to put focus on You. Lord help me to only speaks the truth about You and never to put my own emotions or understanding first. Keep me in check Lord that I may always walk in Your path at all times, following only Your will. Help me Lord to never come to a point in my life, like Job, that my knowledge of You will be distorted and twisted. Keep me wise in You Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
