TITLE: Elihu

Scripture:  Job 15:1 - 35

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After Job’s miserable words, Eliphaz couldn’t stand it and had to rebuke him for Job only sees the negative of the circumstances.  Somehow, it was good that Eliphaz saw that Job was leaning towards the dark side and decided to rebuke him out of it but his rebukes were not helpful because instead of showing Job the good, Eliphaz’ words were belittling Job’s persona.  In short, Eliphaz’ words were harsh and directly attacking Job.  Look at verse 4, Eliphaz accused Job of underminng piety (reverence to God) and hindering devotion to the Lord.  Verse 5 showed Eliphaz turning the mirror back to Job, he stated the obvious by showing Job that his own words condemns him and not the words of his friends...which I believe is true as I pondered on it.  Job’s words were destroying his faith to God.  This was an eye-opening revelation from Eliphaz, one that Job should have listened to but Eliphaz, instead of stopping from there and pointing Job back to who God is truly, Eliphaz went on belittling Job.  Verses 7 - 13 showed that Eliphaz questioned what Job has to make him special and pointed out that everything he has, his friends has too, so he was no exception.  He is the same as them.  

Now let me stop for a moment and elaborate on this because I believe God is teaching us something here.  First and foremost, Eliphaz’ wisdom was true.  Most of the time, it is our own words that condemn us.  Our own testimony that speaks ill or gives us hopelessness.  So we ought to be careful what comes out of our mouth because we might end up killing our own self.  A true friend, like Eliphaz, is not afraid to show us the mirror so we see ourselves fully.  However as a friend, we ought to know our limitations and bring comforts and encouragement instead of allowing our anger or emotions get the best of us.  I believe, Eliphaz was influenced by his emotions.  After hearing Job’s words, he had enough and instead of being helpful to Job, he sees Job’s pride and turn against him.  So we ought to learn from both Job and Eliphaz in this chapter and become better in how we deal with our own sufferings or friends.

Eliphaz continued on explaining to Job, again emphasizing on wicked men’s sufferings.  Eliphaz has been pointing out the same thing over and over again to Job, the short version is...You have sinned that’s why you’re suffering so repent to God to get out of your sufferings!  That’s it!  But Job again, knowing that he did no sin, is too proud to do what they advice him to do.  Eliphaz failed to hear Job’s side and Job did the same.  That’s where conflicts and arguments come out.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for an eye-opening revelation about dealing with our own sufferings in life and how to become a true friend.  Lord indeed, at times, it is our own words that condemn us.  So we are a victim of our own words that kills us slowly inside.  Lord help me to speak life at all times and to be cautious of what comes out of my mouth especially when it refers to myself.  Help me Lord to be like Eliphaz who was able to show Job his true self but give me wisdom to know my limitations and speak words of life instead of death or destructions.  Help me to bring comfort and encouragement instead of hopelessness to others and to myself.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
