Title: For the Director of Music. To the Tune of “Do
Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam. When He Had Fled From Saul Into The Cave.
Scripture: Psalm 57:1 – 11
God’s Message / God’s Promise / God’s Commands:
→ Chapter 57 was written by David in
a time when he was running away from Saul and found himself led inside a cave,
which literally could had become his end.
Inside the cave hiding from Saul was like being in a trap. Normally, caves have one way in and one way
out. And we all know that Saul entered
this cave that David even cut a small portion of his robe to prove that David
could have taken his life then but didn't.
So we know that when David was inside this cave, there was a great
chance of capture and a very slim chance of escape yet God's hands works in
ways we cannot comprehend. So here we
have David writing his experience at that time.
Verse 1 he spoke of his request
for mercy from the Lord but this time he highlighted that God is his refuge and
he will take refuge in Him until the disaster passed. Now, note that David is in a trap being in a
cave yet, his confidence is in the truth that the cave was not his hiding place
or that the cave will keep him safe or hidden, but it was with the assurance
that God is his refuge in this time of disaster. So we have David here assured that his safety
is in God's hands even in a time where he is cornered or trap! What a strong faith! Can we say the same thing to our
situations? Hope that I can :)
In verse 2, instead of preparing
for war, for the coming of Saul inside the cave, he was crying out to God to
vindicate him with the assurance that God will send from heaven and will save
him. Now that's faith! He was in a rocky situation but he was still
confident that he will be delivered by God to safety! Wow!
In verse 4, David illustrated his
situation at that moment, he spoke of being in the midst of lions; forced to
dwell among ravenous beasts - Was there a time in your life that you feel like
everyone is against you? That you are
living in a place of danger? Or that you
are surrounded by people who thought of nothing but your defeat? Well, David can relate to that. But take note of David's desires or actions
even in these times of his life.
Verse 5, David said, "Be
exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the
earth!" Are we even able to think
about God in troubled times? Or are we
too busy worrying of our situation?
David's mind and heart was in one even in difficult times of his
life. It was as if, his whole body,
soul, heart and mind were all programmed and set to exalt God at all times,
including in the worst of all situations.
He spoke of victories that he sees even before it happens. In verse 6, he said that his enemies spread a
net for his feet and he bowed down in distress; they dug a pit in his path but
in the end, his enemies have fallen into it themselves. Now doesn't that speak of victory?
Verse 7, David continued by
speaking of certainty that he will be steadfast in the Lord and encouraged or
motivated himself to wake up to give praise to God among the nations and wing
to Him among the people because of His great love and faithfulness. This is something that we ought to develop in
our lives. Maybe all those years that
David was a shepherd boy, he spent endless times singing and praising God
that's why, praise and worship comes naturally to him at all times. We ought to make praise and worship a habit
too in our lives.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, what an amazing story
of David. Thank You for showing me
David's faith and how steadfast he was in the truth despite of the
circumstances he was in. Lord help me to
develop the same attitude and habit. I
know David may have started young in practicing worship and praise to You but I
know it is never too late for me. Help
me to develop the same practices in my life that I may declare Your glory and
exalt Your Name at all times in my life.
In Jesus' Name, Amen!
