Title: For the Director of Music. According to
Mahalath. A maskil of David.
Scripture: Psalm 53:1 – 6
God’s Message / God’s Promise / God’s Commands:
→ A maskil of David! We learned yesterday that a maskil is a psalm
that teaches us something so today, this chapter, prepare to learn. In fact, every day before we even open our bibles,
we ought to be ready to learn something from the Lord. So today, David will be teaching us. This chapter is just a short one with 6
verses but the meaning is deep. David
started by defining what the fool does.
He said that fool says in his heart, "there is no God" - so we
learned this a few chapters before that these fools do not boast that there is
no God, in fact they only speak of it in their hearts. So a religious person who comes to church
every Sunday or one who handles a Bible study or prayer meeting can be the fool
that David is referring to. Ultimately,
David is referring to someone who does not believe in God, whether he is
obvious about that belief or not, only God truly knows because it is hidden in
man's heart. Because they believe there
is no God, it is given that they will be corrupt and vile because God is just
and without justice, corruption rises.
God is good and if God does not exist then what he does is not good.
In verse 2, David wrote about God
who looks down from heaven to see if there's anyone who understand, who seek
Him. Note, this is what God does on a
daily basis. He seeks for those who seek
Him. That's why every day we ought to
seek the Lord in everything we do because God waits for our call, our cry, our
prayer, our talk, our time... I imagine, God waits patiently every day for us
but He doesn't just wait and stays in one place, HE seeks us! He is looking for us who seeks Him! Wow!
What a sweet sweet thing to do.
That's why every day we can truly declare that God has found us because
He is seeking for us daily!
Hallelujah! That's why we can
never be lost when we seek Him because clearly HE will find us because He is
seeking for us too!!!! Praise God!
David in verse 3 stated the
obvious which is no one is seeking the Lord.
The world has been making us busy daily, bombarded us with workloads and
things to distract us that we end up forgetting to seek Him and so everyone has
turned away! This is true today too.
Then David stated something that I
want to highlight in verse 5, he said, the wicked are overwhelmed with dread
where there was nothing to dread - isn't this like worrying? Feeling dreadful for nothing? Doesn't it something that we all felt or
feeling today? So we worry daily even if
we already know in our minds and hearts that God fights for us and our enemies
are put to shame because God despises them.
In the end, David closed this
chapter with a longing for God to restore His people! The thing is when I re-read this chapter, I
realized that David was somehow writing with frustrations. He is not frustrated with the wicked people
only but at the end, we can clearly include the people who knows the Lord in
the list too because at the end part, David longed for God to restore His
people, meaning God's people were astray during this time. Such a sad thought but it is true! Even today, we have people who proclaim God
as their God and goes to church every Sunday, attends Bible study and prayer
meetings yet in their heart, they are broken, numb and lack faith. May this chapter remind us to trust God fully
and to pray for our brothers and sisters to be restored in God.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for this
powerful message. For teaching me that
even Christians who believe in You can be overwhelmed with dread even if they
already know and experience Your power and glory at one point in their
lives. You taught me that even the
strongest in faith needs prayer and restoration. Lord give me the heart for Your people. Help me to pray for them. Help me not to become like these people that
David described. Help me not to be
corrupt or vile or to turn away from You but give me the passion and commitment
to seek You daily. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
