TITLE: David Defeats The Ammonites

Scripture: 1 Chronicles 19:1 - 19 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?” So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved them, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away. When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.” When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents[a] of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim,[b] Aram Maakah and Zobah. They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maakah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle. On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country. Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites. Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you. Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lordwill do what is good in his sight.” Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. When the Ammonites realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem. After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them. When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him. But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophak the commander of their army. When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the  Ammonites anymore.

NOTES:

> This chapter shows how God is so amazing.  We see David showing kindness to Hanun the son of Nahas for he and his father were ally before but due to fear and believing what others say without confirming the facts, Hanun placed his entire nation into the wrong side of the battle.  His father made the right decision of being an ally to David but because of fear, he became an enemy to David even when there was really no reason to become one.  David extended his kindness but Hanun misinterpretted it and thought that David was spying on his land.  Isn't this something relatable today?  People misunderstanding the goodness of others and interpreting as with an ulterior motive.  In many cases, it is true but because men is paranoid and living in fear, we tend to interpret everything negatively so even the pure things that others do to us, we think of other ulterior motives, which is how conflict arises and relationships are destroyed.  I remember Zig Ziglar mentioned in one of his quotes that marriages would be much easier and happier when the husbands and wives realized that they are on the same page.  And most relationships, whether husbands and wives, siblings, friends, or any other relationships or partnership are like that.  We ought to remember that we are all on the same team and not jump into conclusion, thinking the negative of the actions of others towards us.  

> Another lesson i learned from this chapter is the faith of Joab in God.  He knew that the Ammonites hired help from the Arameans yet despite of their number and their resources, Joab together with his brother was sure of his position.  And his words were powerful...he said in verse 13, "Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God.  The Lord will do what is good in his sight!" - so here we see Joab, not concerning himself of winning the battle, he knows God gives the victory and he witnessed that with his king David and so he was not worrying or thinking about how to win, he just said, let's fight bravely!  Sometimes, we ought to be like Joab, to think of not giving up and keeping the fight and continuing with our faith in Christ, not thinking about the result or the outcome but what matters is the process, the now, what we are standing for right this moment.  Joab was not thinking about strategy, he was thinking about how to defeat the Ammonites with the Arameans...he had faith that the Lord will do what is good in His sight and He focused on what he was instructed to do, which is to fight (David sent him to fight the Ammonites).  Joab was focused on that mission, the calling that his king gave him.  We have to understand that when God calls us to do something, He has provided us everything we need even if we do not see it in our midst right this instant.  All we have to do is focus on what He has called us to do, He is in charge of the victory, of the result, we just focus on our obedience to His calling. 

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, great and Mighty God!  I am amazed of the lessons and treasures You have in store in Your word specifically revealed to me in the right time.  Lord thank You becuase I can be assured of Your will.  My focus is in the obedience of Your calling in my life.  I do not need to think about the result or the tools needed or the process even because You take care of that.  All i need is to obey and to focus on doing what You have said I should do.  Thank You Lord.  Lord, help me to have an open eyes that sees the goodness of people.  Help me to never jump into conclusions especially when i don’t have confirmation from You.  Help me Lord to be humble and never think of negative of others but instead, let me see the good in them...let me see You in them Lord.  Help me Lord to have the patience and understanding I need to deal with them right.  And in every battle, help me to have faith like Joab, who was focus and determined to obey the command of his king.  You are my King Lord and i want to be focus on the command You have for me.  Help me Lord to fulfill this as I am too weak to do so on my own.  Holy SPirit, I need You to make this possible.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
