TITLE: David’s Plan For The Temple
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 28:1 - 21
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the warriors and all the brave fighting men. King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of theLord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. But God said to me,‘You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’ “Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. Of all my sons—and the Lord has given me many—he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throneof the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’ “So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever. “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.” Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. He gave him instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the Lord, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service. He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: the weight of gold for the gold lampstands and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; the weight of gold for each table for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables; the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense. He also gave him the plan for the chariot, that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and overshadow the ark of the covenant of the Lord. “All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.” David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished. The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing person skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command.”
NOTES:
> David showed true humility not only to God but to all men under him. He summoned everyone (leaders and officials of Israel), everyone in service to him in a meeting. His speech started that he had a desire in his heart to build a house but God has greater plans than what he had. Here you can see that David recognized the importance of God's plans. David's heart is in the right place when he made the plan to build a temple for the Ark of God, but God has better plans. If we really look into a human perspective, we might feel that David was mistreated because he had the desire, he had the plan, he had the structures, etc yet in the end, the job was given to somoene else. David's behavior here clearly demonstrated his humility when he recognized that God's plan is better than his. Note that David also knew the reason why he was not to build the temple and he accepted it. God revealed to David the reason why he cant build the temple and he willingly accepted the reason and stood by it. So if we seek enough, God will reveal the reasons why things didnt go the way we planned it to be. Many times, God already told us the reason yet we are too hard-headed to accept the reason so we still rebel. In David's case, he did what was right and surrendered everything to his son Solomon, whom God chose to be the person in charge of this plan. Here you can also see how David saw God's grace in his life. That even if he is already king, he felt that it was only becuase God chose him and nothing more (which is the truth). DAvid never forget where he stood or what his role is that's why he highlighted that God chose his family, God chose judah over all tribes...he emphasized that his role as a king was a privilege and given by Grace and not somethign that he achieved on his own. That's why it was easy for him to surrender his plans about the temple to his son Solomon, for he knew that everything he had or the authority he enjoys are all nothing but a gift. What an aamzing character and heart. Now i understand why he is a man after God's own heart. David then gave all his plans to his son Solomon in the eyes of everyone and before God showing great humility from him again. Then he reminded Solomon of the importance of acknowledging God as his Father and to serve him wholeheartedly and a willing mind. David also gave the reason why Solomon must serve God wholeheartedly and with a willing mind, he said God searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. This reason David gave is true for he saw it happening in his life. God knew his heart to build the temple, God knew his desire when he fell on Satan's trap to do a census, God saw everything and DAvid witnessed God's visibility in his life firsthand. In this chapter, you can see David declaring his desire to build a temple for the Ark of God, and he portrayed great humility when he recognized God's plans greater than his and gave the responsibility to his son Solomon. David emphasized on the importance of understanding that everything he had or will have were only given by God and nothing that he can boasts of. David also presented Solomon two choices of what he can do with this plan. He can seek God or forsake God. And DAvid had hope that his Son will do the right thing when he said, "consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. be strong and do the work. "He gave specific and detailed instructions to Solomon on how he can make this plan a success, showing great wisdom as a King and servant of the Lord. Then lastly, David assured Solomon that God will be with Him and will complete the task with him. David's assurance speech to Solomon manifested great faith to God. For he speaks with clear security and assurance even though, he didnt witness this temple built.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus thank You for David’s life. Thank You because David’s life serve as a great lesson and a valuable one to all of us. Lord I am amazed of how You have greatly revealed Yourself in his life. May it be that I have the same humility as David had when he was still alive. I want to have a pure love for You and a humble heart; to have hope in You and great faith that You will finish the work You have started in us. Lord break me if there’s a need to do so that I may always remember that everything is a gift from You and nothing I have or will have is something that I can earn. Everythign is thru Your Grace. Give me wisdom like David that I may be able to instruct others of what is right before You. Help me to always view everything as how it is ...a gift from You (which is the truth). Help me Lord to never boast or rebel, give me a humble heart to serve You wholeheartedly and a willing mind. Help me to seek You always. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
