TITLE: God’s Promise to David

Scripture: 1 Chronicles 17:1 - 27 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.” Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.” But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders[a] whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. “‘I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor.  I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.’” Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

NOTES:

> This was a very sweet moment between David and God.  David after settling in his palace thought of the same comfort for God.  Though God’s comfort may not be in a house or a palace made in cedar yet David’s heart and intention for God to be comfortable in the city God gave him, pleased the Lord.  But what’s more exciting is God’s response to David’s thoughtful gesture.  Note that building a house for God physically may not really be what God wants because He dwells with us and He is not limited in one building or home, but David’s full intention of keeping God close to where he is and setting God a place of His own among His people deeply touched the Lord and made God promised David great things.  God’s promise is not only for David alone but it impacts the whole nation, David’s whole kingdom and even the people who were not born yet!  Amazing!  God’s promise is not limited to one person, His will or works impacts the lives of many people.  David was the main recipient of God’s promise yet the whole Israel benefited from it.  Wicked people were no longer able to oppress them.  God will build a house for David and his offspring (descendants), his children that were not yet born or come to life, will be established!  God made a promise to build a relationship to David’s lineage even before David’s descendants were born.  Hallelujah!  This is the reason why we ought to Praise God for His goodness not only in our lives but the people before us because it is possible that we have this relationship with God now, because of the people before us who have touched and pleased the Lord.  God promised David to never take away His love from his son.  Now this is an amazing promise!  God promised to never take away His love from us!  Amen!  And all because of David who touched the heart of God.  So never forget to Praise God for the people before us because we are experiencing the goodness of God today could probably be because of what they did for God before.  

→ Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men. “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, Lord. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises. “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God. “And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you. “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26 You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”

NOTES:

> David’s prayer was so amazing!  David’s prayer did not include any supplication or requests but it was all declaration of God’s goodness and greatness!  David’s prayer is filled with humility.  God lifted david up and gave him a glimpse of what is to come before Israel and his descendants in the future yet despite of this, David remained humbled and grateful to God.  Declaring God as the only one deserving Praise!  David’s response to God’s promises is a declaration of God’s glory, honor and power.  David spoke of praise and worship before God.  Note that when this happened, God’s promises did not come to pass yet.  It took years and years before all these things became true and David was no longer alive.  Yet upon hearing God’s promises, David declared God’s greatness and goodness as if it is already happening!  Now that is faith!  

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, My King and Saviour!  Thank You for You are my God and I am Your daughter.  Lord thank You because You have planned everything ahead for us and You have set great things before us...especially to the people after us.  Lord help me to understand that You see all things and You are in control.  Help me to see the magnitude of Your greatness and power that i may always declare Your glory every day.  Lord help me to have faith like David, I want to see everything as if it is already even if it has not come to pass yet.  I want to have a faith like David whose only words were declaration of Your goodness and power.  I come humbly before You Lord declaring praise because You deserve it.  Remind me Lord of all the great things You did and will do not only in my life but in the life of the people before and after me.  Help me Lord to always be grateful like David.  And show me Your promises Lord.  Help me to realize that Your promise impacts all people and not just me.  And let me auto-response be Praise to Your Name.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
