TITLE: Ministering Before the Ark
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 15:1 - 43
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to extol,[a]thank, and praise the Lord, the God of Israel: Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel,[b] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.
That day David first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise to the Lord in this manner: Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, you his servants, the descendants of Israel, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob. He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers[c] his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.” When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it, they[d] wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.” Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place. Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[e] holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.” Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.” David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each day’s requirements. 38 He also left Obed-Edom and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were gatekeepers. David left Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeon to present burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law of the Lord, which he had given Israel. With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord, “for his love endures forever.” Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate. Then all the people left, each for their own home, and David returned home to bless his family.
NOTES:
> What struck me in this passage really is the first few verses where David sacrificed both a burnt offering and fellowship offerings before the Ark then after that he blessed the people in the Name of the Lord then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. Now what king today would do the same? In our time today, kings are being served but David truly had a humble heart because even as a king he served the people by blessing them (thru words) and he also became a blessing to them thru service. David was not too royal or too high to serve each man and woman. Such an amazing humble heart. Let it be a lesson to us all that being in a position does not give us the right to be served, in fact, being in the position God placed us, means we are of service to the people under us. This is how God sets everything in place. He places us in power or in position to be of service to His people and to Him and not the other way around.
> Another amazing thing in this verse is how David and all the people gave praise to God. They speaks of what He has done, how God has blessed them and preserve their lives even when they were still few in numbers. Note that when they praised the Lord, they did not limit their thanksgiving to what God has done in their lives but even to the lives of their fathers. Because everything in their family line happened for a purpose so that they are able to enjoy everything that God has blessed them with now. So let this be another lesson for us. Do not forget the great things God has done in our lives and give Him praise for it but remember what God has done to our parents, our grandparents, our great grandparents, to all our ancestors. Because everything happened so that today, we enjoy everything we have with God. Amazing Lord! Thank You so much! David spoke about singing of God’s goodness, declaring His greatness, speaking out from our mouths the testimonies of God’s love to give glory, praise, worship, power, and honor back to Him, who deserves it all!
> Note also that David ensured that everything was taken care of when it comes to the Lord’s matter before he left to go home. And this time, he did everything in the right process with the right intentions. But most of all note that David, blessed the Lord’s people before he blessed his own family. Let this also become a reminder to us because humans think the opposite. We feel because we are related to the person, we have more privilege, in a way, we do, but when it comes to God’s children, God’s children come first. David did so, he blessed the Israelites, before he went home to bless his family. But note that his family was also Israelites, so in truth, David blessed his family twice! So indeed, his relatives did get more than the others :)
Prayer:
Lord Jesus how amazing You are to me. Thank You for Your loving kindness and Your mercy that overflows every day in my life. Thank You Lord because You taught me that I am in position or in power for a purpose and that is to serve the people under me and not the other way around. Thank You Lord because You have confirmed that what we did yesterday was right, we do ought to declare Your goodness thru singing, speaking, shouting, dancing, etc. Lord help me to always remember Your goodness in my life and even in the lives of my ancestors. Help me to remember to declare praise not only to the good things You have done for me but also to the people around me and before me. Lord help me to realize that though my relatives are more blessed, i am to prioritize Your people. But in the end they will have greater portion because they are my family. Lord truly You are fair and just at all times. Thank You Jesus. Create in me a grateful heart always Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
