TITLE: Solomon Asks For Wisdom

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 1:1 - 17

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Solomon son of David established himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great. Then Solomon spoke to all Israel—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon, for God’s tent of meeting was there, which Moses the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. Now David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem. But the bronze altar that Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired of him there. Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it. That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.” Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel. Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[a] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[b]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels[c] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[d] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.

NOTES:

> David's life story ended and 2 chronicles paved a way for Solomon, his son.  The 1st chapter of this book showed Solomon as the son that David raised.  A son who is feeling helpless and unfamiliar with the responsibilities that was left to him.  The great thing that Solomon did before he even started his rule is when he came to God.  This chapter started with that...we see a young man, feeling unsure, maybe a little afraid, feeling the burden or pressure of the legacy that his father left him...and he felt the heaviness of all of these upon his shoulder so he did what his father's greatest reminder and instruction to him...to seek God wholeheartedly and with a willing mind.  At this point in Solomon's life, his life has been plotted for him and he had to walk on it with the pressure of the greatness of his father's reputation.  So he did what he believe to be the best teaching his father gave him, he went to the source, he went to God.  Solomon's response to God's question was also amazing.  When God asked him what he wanted, Solomon started by declaring the greatness and kindness of God in David's life and so this time, it is his time now.  And Solomon reminded the Lord of His promise to David for Solomon's reign as King over God's people.  It's as if Solomon was telling God, I've seen Your kindness to my father, but today, it's my time now.  It feels like Solomon was telling God, i'm ready to have a relationship with You.  And he asked for wisdom to lead God's people, which is really a noble request - thinking of his Father's legacy and how his father gained God's favor by leading His people right.  And so Solomon requested for it from Him.  This pleased God, not just because Solomon asked for wisdom out of anything but also because his request for wisdom showed that Solomon is ready to be in a relationship with God.  When God gives, it usually is an abundant and continuous supply.  So when Solomon requested for wisdom, it was a continuous supply until the end of his life, which means this wisdom that comes from God will link them together in a relationship until the end of his life on earth.  And so aside from Wisdom, God granted his wish and even so much more.  For God will be in direct relationship with Solomon until the end of his reign and so wealth, honor, success, leadership, wisdom, etc followed Solomon becasue God is with Him.  Wisdom is God!Hallelujah!  

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for a great lesson today.  Truly all wisdom comes from You, You are the source of it all.  And just like Solomon, i seek for Your wisdom.  I seek for YOu.  I want You to be with me all through the reign of my life on earth.  Lord, help me to always remember that everything comes from You and if i want everything, all i need is You.  Help me to believe this but most of all, to live it!  I need You Lord and I need You to help me walk the right path on earth.  Give me Your wisdom that I may lead this life You gave right.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
