TITLE: David Count the Fighting Men

Scripture: 1 Chronicles 21:1 - 30 

God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:

→ Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.” But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?” The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah. But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel. Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.” The Lord said to Gad, David’s seer, “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’” So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice:12 three years of famine, three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.” David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.” So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.15 And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the Lordsaw it and relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite. David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown. David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done?Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

NOTES:

> This is the first in David's story that the Bible spoke of Satan coming up against him.  The chapter starts with revealing that Satan came up against Israel and so he attacked the king, David, by provoking him to do a menial task that is really harmless if you think about it.  Taking a census is something that was done in the nation of Israel even in the times of Moses and other God's chosen leaders...But in this case, God did not commanded David to do so.  It was Satan who urged him to do so... it is really not about the task in this matter but more likely the intention of why it was done.  Because even Joab saw the heart of the king that he tried talking him out of it but failed.  Joab said, The Lord multiply His troops a hundred times over, and reminded David that all the troops are God's so what's the real intention of taking a census now?  Based on Joab's words, emphasizing on what he said about the troops being God's, this could mean that David's heart in taking the census is with the intention of taking credit or taking ownership of what belongs to God.  For the past few chapters, I have indicated the humility of David.  How he has a humbled heart always and so when Satan came to provoke him, his attack was to destroy that humility and in this chapter, it seemed like Satan succeeded for David called for a census and despite of Joab's reminder, David's command overruled his objections. David at this point of his life, is already living in one success after another.  His victories were great that all the nations on earth heard of him and so he has been living a life of success.  And most of the time, when things are working fine always, we lose our guard down and tend to take credit for things that really doesn’t belong to us.  And David fell on the same trap so when he ordered to take the census, it was not much on the command but the intention and Joab knew it.  So let us always be careful and always inquire of the Lord before doing anything.  

But let us look at Joab, Joab was loyal to his king and very obedient.  However despite of his obedience and loyalty to the king, he knew that there was something wrong.  So he obeyed the kings order but made sure that the Levites and Benjamites were not included in the census because he knew that the king's commands was repulsive and it was evil in the eyes of God.  His purpose was to be David's right hand and support and he fulfilled that purpose.

So God's anger was upon the nation and punished them for David's action.  The king's action impacts the whole nation and the consequence of his action impacted the nation more than him.  David chose to be upon the mercy of God, and God chose to punish the Israelites for 3 days.  Clearly, God's mercy was amazing and His love truly is great.  The choices were: 3 years of famine (longer suffering); 3 months of being under his enemies (David knew that his enemy is not the people but Satan and Satan with the human hand can cause so much pain towards DAvid, pain that is unimaginable)...and lastly, 3 days in God's wrath.  So David chose to fall into the hands of God, which is a very wise choice.  And so a plague came to Israel but clearly, God's amazing love overcame all anger and sin becuase in the middle of the plague, God stood and intervened against His own command.  Such an amazing display of God's love, compassion and mercy!  Note that God felt His love first before David pleaded for the plague to stop.  So it was not because of David that God stopped the plague, it was because of His great love to His people.  Hallelujah!

→ Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.  So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord. While Araunah was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground. David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.” Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.” But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.” So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering. Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.  At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there.  The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon. But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

NOTES:

> The above passage was one of the most known story today because David declined Araunah’s offer to give everything David needed to build the altar to God for free.  David insisted to pay the full price and will not take for the Lord what is Araunah’s or sacrifice a burnt offering that will cost him nothing.  To many, they have highlighted this passage, showcasing David’s nobility and love for God...but the truth is, it is the opposite.  David was guilty!  The nation of Israel suffered a plague that killed thousands of people and now, he was instructed to build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah.  There was a reason why Araunah’s place was chosen and God’s grace and mercy was abundant to David that He even gave everything David needed to build the altar, but David insisted to pay full price.  God was demonstrating His grace and love towards David, that despite of what he had done, God is willing to forgive him and even provided everything for David to build the altar as his reconciliation.  But David insisted to pay instead of receiving what is needed for God’s altar.  And so in the end as you can see, fear remained in David’s heart and it hindered him to draw near to the tabernacle because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.  I believe when God’s mercy and forgiveness comes, it draws us near to Him but our own pride, our own sin, our own guilt, lead us far from God.  And this is what happened to David.  God’s forgiveness is free and it cannot be bought.  Yet David felt the need to pay for it, in fact, he insisted and so in the end, there was no peace, only fear.  But the great news here is that our forgiveness cost us nothing, it is for free, given out of love, mercy and compassion from our Lord.  Receive it!  Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus amazing God, wonderful Savior, Mighty King and My Father.  Thank You for Your love is greater than life.  Your love is amazing that You intervened so that we will be saved.  Thank You because Your love cost us nothing.  You give it to us for free and we do not have to pay, nor do we need to do anything to earn it.  Lord thank You because You never fail to remind us especially when we are in a shady situation.  Lord, help me to hear Your reminders and warnings.  Open my ears hear and let me listen.  Help me Lord to be sensitive like Joab who knew the heart of David, let me be sensitive to Your heart Lord.  Help me Lord to always guard my heart so that i will not be provoked or incited by Satan.  Lord keep me preserved in Your presence.  Help me Lord to always inquire of You and not try to take credit or ownership on my own.  Lord show me that all things happens because of You.  Everything I have is Yours and the only thing I have that i can truly say I decided to have, is You.  So let me always remember the proper chain of command, of ownership and of credit.  Let me always give glory to You and be humble always.  DO not allow me to be blinded by my successes but help me to overcome and always give credit to You alone.  Lord let me remember always that I cannot do anything that will earn Your love, or forgiveness, or mercy, or grace...help me to understand that You freely gave it to me and there is nothing i can do that will make You love me more.  Thank You Jesus for this.  Help me Lord.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
