TITLE: Saul Takes His Life
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 10:1 - 14
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him. Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together. When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them. The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon. When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days. Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
NOTES:
> This passage shows us the importance of leadership. Saul was chosen by God but along the course of his reign as a king, he decided to disregard the words of the Lord and acted on his own abilities, wisdom and will. So the Lord abandoned him. He didn’t realized that his actions impact the whole nation of Israel. That’s why when he decided to kill himself for his own selfish reason, his armor bearer did the same thing and when news of his death spread, the Israelites abandoned their own towns and fled in fear as well. Saul feared for his life in the hands of his enemy, the Philistines, so the people (Israelites) also fled in fear of them. Saul’s act of killing himself is an act of running away from his enemies, and his people did the same thing as well. So here we can see that the people under us or the people God gave under our care reflects our own character and behavior. So when we make decisions, we should always consider the impact of it for everyone and not just our own. When Saul lost his sons, whom possibly the men he trusted, and he knew God is no longer with him, so he felt alone and decided to die as well. He already broke his promise to God by consulting a medium instead of God regarding the outcome of the battle he will face, he also decided to run away from his problems. The original Saul, the one who met with Samuel before he was anointed king, came back. When Saul neglected the Lord and broke his promise to God, the Spirit of God left him and it was only the SPirit of God that made him a great king. Remember that Saul had no leadership skills before, as he only followed what his servant said they would do when he was looking for his father’s animals. He didn’t have any initiative and wanted to give up looking for the animals. But it was the servant for pressed on and convinced Saul to go to Samuel, which led to his anointing. So this Saul, the one who has no initiative, who was fearful, who has no leadership skill, was left of him after the Spirit left him. So we have to understand that it is not by our own skills, abilities or wisdom that we receive victory, it is thru Jesus alone! Note that the reason why Saul died was because he became unfaithful to God and broke his promise to the Lord. He totally disgraced God by going to a medium instead of consulting directly to God. So Israel was turned to David, the man after God’s own heart!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, great and mighty God. Truly, all things comes from You; all great and mighty things. Lord, no matter what victory or accomplishments we received, truly, we can never boast of it because You are the source of all good things. Saul became great because of Your Spirit and so when Your Spirit left, he became himself again who was not fit to be a king. Lord help me to recognize that I am nothing without You. Many times, I don’t understand the weight of this truth so Lord, show it to me and help me to always make You the center of my life like David did. I want to set up a pedestal of You in my life Lord and I want others to see it and know that it is only thru You that I am able. I come humbly before You Lord because indeed my skills, talents or whatever man can ever boast is nothing. Lord remind me always whenever I am about to fell into a trap of taking credit for the things You did, that You are the source of it all. Thank You Lord for everything. I am forever humbled and grateful. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
