TITLE: The Musicians
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 25:1 - 31
God’s Message / God’s Commands / God’s Promises:
→ David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: From the sons of Asaph: Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision. As for Jeduthun, from his sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking and praising the Lord. As for Heman, from his sons: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. (All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.) All these men were under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king. Along with their relatives—all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord—they numbered 288. Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties. The first lot, which was for Asaph, fell to Joseph, his sons and relatives the second to Gedaliah, him and his relatives and sons the third to Zakkur, his sons and relatives the fourth to Izri,[d] his sons and relatives the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and relatives the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and relatives the seventh to Jesarelah,[e] his sons and relatives the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and relatives the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and relatives the tenth to Shimei, his sons and relatives the eleventh to Azarel,[f] his sons and relatives the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and relatives the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and relatives the fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons and relatives the fifteenth to Jerimoth, his sons and relatives the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and relatives the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and relatives the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and relatives the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and relatives the twentieth to Eliathah, his sons and relatives the twenty-first to Hothir, his sons and relatives the twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons and relatives the twenty-third to Mahazioth, his sons and relatives the twenty-fourth to Romamti-Ezer, his sons and relatives.
NOTES:
> Music truly has a great role in worship and praise to God. David divided the levites specifically being in charge of prophesy, musicians, and praising God. In this chapter, God clearly showed us the 3 divisions under musicians...the sons of Asaph, specifically prophesying under the king's supervisioin...it could be that their singing are songs of prophesy. The sons of Jeduthun, who played harp in thanking and praising the Lord so their skills on musical instruments were used to praise and thank God. and lastly the sons of Heman, who were specifically given to him, all 14 sons and 3 daughters, to exalt God and Heman will be exalted too. So we have a group that prophesy, a group that plays the harps in thanking and praising God and a group who were specifically created to exalt God. So let us remember that in the presence of God or in His temple, prophesy, praising, thanksgiving and exaltation of God must be present! So in our selves, let us find time to praise and thank God, Exalt His Name and hear or speak prophesy from God. Note that all of them were tagged under Musicians. So music, does not only bring out praise or exaltation to God or thanksgiving, it is venue for prophesies too. Amazing!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus praise and glory to Your Name always! Lord I am amazed of the value of music in Your temple. That’s why it is just right to listen to worship and praise songs so to fill our selves with songs of positivity and worship of You as we are Your temple. Lord i know You are trying to tell me about prophesy being part of music or to be more specific, that music is a venue of prophesy. I didnt see it that way Lord before but help me to fully understand Lord. I am also amazed that Your promised Heman to be exalted thru his sons and daughters. Let me bring the same exaltation to my parents even if they are already dead as i serve You in praise and worship. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
